The Pittsburgh Steelers made Illinois' Rashard Mendenhall their top draft pick.
But shortly thereafter, Illinois coach Ron Zook apparently kicked Rashard's brother Walter Mendenhall off the team and yanked his scholarship.
What's up over there???
"Steelers No. 1 draft pick Rashard Mendenhall isn’t pleased with his old school these days.
His older brother, Walter, was relieved of his scholarship by Illinois coach Ron
Zook after the more talented Mendenhall left school following his junior season.
“It upset me,” Mendenhall told reporters at his press conference
Thursday. “But to tell you the truth, the way things were there it didn’t
surprise me too much. They were just never in our favor there.”
Rashard said his brother will finish up his playing career at Illinois State where
he’ll also study for his master’s degree."
"An Illinois spokesperson confirmed Walter Mendenhall is no longer participating in
team activities. Rashard and Walter's mother, Sibyl Mendenhall, said the decision
to leave the team wasn't Walter's.
Illinois coach Ron Zook was not immediately available for comment.
''They said they didn't need him anymore,'' Sibyl said when asked why Walter did
not participate in spring workouts. ''You'll have to ask the coaching staff. It blindsided us.''
