Some information has leaked out about the voting for this year's Major League Baseball Hall of Fame voting. With 39.9% of the votes known, Bartonville's Jim Thome received votes on 94% of the ballots in his first year on the ballot! It looks like Chipper Jones, also his first year on the ballot, was the only player receiving a higher percentage of votes so far. A player on the ballot must receive votes on at least 75% of the ballots to be elected into the Hall of Fame. The other 3 players receiving more than 75% (Vladimir Guerrero, Edgar Martinez, & Trevor Hoffman) were returnees who did not receive enough votes last year.
It's looking good for Jim Thome!
Final voting results will be announced January 24. Electees will be inducted Sunday, July 29 in Cooperstown, NY.
Players on the HOF ballot-
Note that players with great HOF resumes but who were either known or suspected to have used performance enhancing substances, are not anywhere close to getting enough votes from the Baseball Writers who do the voting. They include Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Manny Ramirez, and Sammy Sosa.
