  • NFL Draft- Bears

The 2017 NFL draft is tonight (Thurs. 4/27).
The Bears owned the #3 overall pick, but they surprised everyone by trading their #3 pick, along with their 3rd and 4th round picks, and another 3rd round pick in the 2018 draft just to move up 1 slot to the #2 spot. Apparently, the SF 49ers, who owned the #2 pick were approached by another team who wanted to trade up to get the player the Bears wanted, so the Bears payed a hefty ramson to move up.
So after the Bears gave up all those draft picks to move up 1 single slot, they picked North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. Trubisky was considered the most NFL-ready quarterback in the draft, but he was not expected to get drafted this high.

Incidentally, the #1 overall pick by the Cleveland Browns was Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M, as expected.

They gave up too much. They need a little of everything this year. This reminds me of the trade for Cutler.

but a good quarterback is the main difference between a Superbowl contender and a last place team as all Bears fans know.

The Bears really needed a "quarterback of the future", so I like the fact they got the best quarterback in the draft. But they may have overpaid.
Here is the list of the last dozen QBs the Bears have drafted:
David Fales, Nathan Enderle, Dan LeFevour, Kyle Orton, Craig Krenzel, Rex Grossman, Cade McNown, Moses Moreno, Will Furrer, Paul Justin, Peter Tom Willis, and Brent Snyder.
Plus, they traded two 1st round picks and a 3rd rounder for Jay Cutler. None of those moves worked out.
If Trubisky turns out to be another Aaron Rodgers, or even another Matthew Stafford, it will have been worth it. Let's hope he doesn't turn out to be another Cade McNown.

The NFL draft is over. But the Bears just signed a free agent who played against Bradley the last 2 seasons.
The Bears signed Franko House to a free agent contract as a tight end. He was a forward on the Ball State basketball team-

On 12/6/16- Franko House started and scored 9 points and had 5 rebounds in Ball State's win over Bradley in Muncie.
On 11/13/15- House started and scored 7 points and had 3 rebounds against Bradley in Bradley's 54-53 win in Peoria.

Franko House- he is a 6'6", 248 pound forward- He last played football as a junior in high school.
Franko House (15) Forward - Career Notes Two-time All-MAC (second team in 2016 and third team in 2017) … MAC All-Defensive Team in 2016 … finished his career as

There's been over 50 Super Bowls. The Bears have only been in 2 of them and have won 1. Can't put all the blame on the QBs.

The Bears gave up two firsts, a third, and Orton for Cutler. They swapped firsts and gave up two thirds and a fourth for Trubisky. They overpaid a little, but it's not in the same universe as the Cutler trade. Third round picks aren't nearly as valuable.

I would prefer that they built the team up this year and take a QB next year, however.

                FWIW

Thursday's Bears Packers game had very disappointingly low ratings (down 13%)

last Sunday's games were also down considerably - a shocking 10-16% drop from just the week before -
The ongoing political protests surrounding players decisions to take a knee or not to take a knee during the national anthem caused a dip in the NFL's "Sunday Night Football" ratings.

BTW- where long ago the numbers on ratings took a little time and depended on certain customers filling out surveys - nowadays the ratings and viewership data is almost instantaneously available.
Every cable system can know instantly if your TV is on and what station you are watching and tabulate the statistics (that little box with lights on it is constantly sending that info back to them). So these numbers are accurate!

I agree- except I preferred to watch a meaningless Cubs game where they rested their entire starting lineup

                    btw- a question..

There have been many athletes previously who have protested standing during the National Anthem -
and yet none of them got even a fraction of the hero-worship or glowing media praise as we are currently seeing.
Why? Mahmoud Abdul Rauf, 1968 Olympic sprinters, Danny Granger, etc..

here's a great article on how the tradition of standing at athletic events for the anthem got started- it involves the CUBS!
