David Beckham has reached a five-year $250 million deal with the MLS. He will finish this season playing for Real Madrid, and then join the L.A. Galaxy in August.
He's just going to Los Angeles to be a celebrity, not a soccer player. I think he realizes he won't get much more PT in Europe, and LA is the center of all the tabloid stuff (Britney and Paris, etc etc). And remember who his wife is, Victoria Beckham. Pretty much the European version of the tabloid darlings.
I frankly don't think this move is about anything other than publicity or $$$$$. For both sides.
The MLS is MUCH more popular than the WNBA. This move is not just about the money, this is about a making a step up in the credibility of MLS as a top tier inrenational league. I just hope that clubs don't start over spending and bring about the demise of the league, much like the NASL.
People need to recognize there is a huge difference between playing hard, and playing well...
