Minnie Minoso led the AL in 'hit by pitch' every year but one from his rookie season through 1961...when he was traded to the Cardinals

Minoso had a reputation for 'crowding the plate'

It was said that Minoso stood so close in the batters box that his head actually stuck out over the plate

I remember when Minnie was traded to my Cardinals(I was a very happy young fan).

In May of '62 Minoso ran into the Busch Stadium wall chasing a fly ball(in the days before the walls were padded)-fracturing his skull and breaking his wrist.

Somehow, Minnie recovered and made it back to play late in the season-only to almost immediately be hit by a pitch that fractured his forearm

The Cardinals released Minnie after the season

Being the great White Sox fan that I am I always felt bad for Minnie when they traded him before the pennant winning 1959 season. Met Minnie at the Fieldhouse when he was a guest of, I believe, the Independent Sports Club of Peoria. That night a friend took a picture of me and Minnie. Before he could get the film developed, someone stoled his camera.

Minnie, along with Luis Aparicio, Nellie Fox, Billy Pierce, Sherm Lollar, and all the others on the 1956 White Sox were the reason I became a Sox fan, despite coming from a family of Cubs fans. In a way, Minnie was to the Sox what Ernie Banks was to the Cubs. He was a great ambassador for the White Sox, and for baseball. Just barely a month ago he appeared and greeted fans at the annual SoxFest at the age of 90 (or 92 depending on who you believe). He was a great guy, and a pretty good baseball player. If he'd played for another team, he'd probably be in the Hall of Fame. He was a 7-time All Star and received votes for MVP most of the years he played.

I was thinking the same thing - Minnie & Ernie were both so well loved by loyal Sox & Cubs fans..

It is a sad day for Sox fans. Minnie Minoso "Cuban Comet", was the face of the White Sox. It seemed that wherever Bill Veeck would own a ball club Minnie would also be there. I remember when Bill took the Sox back over in 1976, after his previous ownership in the late 50's and early 60's, he, Minnie and Rollie Hemond were dressed in revolutionary war costumes for opening day at home plate. It was to commemorate out country's bi-centennial.

Minnie will be missed. Us lifelong Sox fans will never forget him.
