  • Chicago Bears gripe thread

I am not that big of a Bears fan any more since they have done such a poor job of selecting head coaches...but FWIW I just wanted to gripe about the game last night. Winnable game, beatable opponent...

...Of course they played horribly for 3 quarters, then early in the 4th quarter actually looked like they had a chance and were within striking distance...

But three things really bummed me out and make me just never want to watch another Bears game until both Cutler & Trestman are gone.

-first, just when it looked like maybe the Bears had a chance when they were down 24-8 - just needed possibly 2 more TD's and 2-pt conversions - then they start stalling.
Yes - they were lingering in huddles, walking to the line, taking forever for each play - acting like they had the lead & were eating up the clock!
Even the play-by-play guys repeatedly commented that there was zero sense of urgency or trying to get the plays off to have more opportunity to score. Just wasting gobs of time.

-then they repeatedly ran short, clock-eating runs up the middle as if trying to get into the center of the field for a FG - even though we all knew they had to get a TD.
Again - it completely stumped the announcers as well as any fan still hoping we'd pass or go out of bounds to get more plays.

-then lastly - just as we might be in position on offense to score - the offensive line breaks down and Cutler starts throwing bad passes & getting sacked. Same old story - if offense is Mark Trestman's specialty then why is the Bears offense the very worst part of their game?

Actually, as bad as the offense has been, IMO the defense is much worse.

They rank dead last in points given up-

I am big Bears fan, and it stresses me to see them so bad after they fired their head coach 2 years ago after a decent 10-6 record, and promised things would be better with a new coach.

But I can take solace in a number of excuses I have gleaned from Kirk Wessler, and a handful of supposed Bradley fans-
-It's not fair to judge Trestman after only 2 years
-It takes 4-5 years for the new coach to get all his own players in and get them accustomed to his system
-rebuilding takes many years, so fans just have to be patient (from Kirk)
-It doesn't matter how many years it takes as long as the new coach "is doing things the right way"
      -getting good players "is hard"
      -scheduling "is hard
-winning against good teams "is hard"
-fans' expectations are way too high
-Bears fans are too hung up on their past
-there have been some injuries to some of the marginal players
-the coaching is good, but "the players just don't execute"
-even the greatest NFL coaches in history weren't always successful their first couple seasons
-Trestman was "Coach of the Year" in the Canadian Football League
-Trestman won a couple league titles in the Canadian Football League, so we can't question his coaching ability
-The Bears have so much money invested in Trestman, that they probably can't fire him
-we were never Super Bowl champions under Lovie Smith either
-Lovie was never able to sustain success when he was the coach, so we are expecting too much from Trestman
-Those "promises" weren't really promises, they were just goals that haven't been met yet
-"Words mean something" when it was the previous coach, but now words don't really mean anything and we can't expect the current coach to live up to the promises made.
-The next draft or two will produce "a defining moment" for the Bears
-Don't worry, the Bears will sign some nice players to their practice squad, and I am sure they'll "appear to be impact players".
-Some people might think the Bears "are better, by a light-year or two they're better"!
-If the coach keeps doing things the right way, "better days are ahead for Bradley", oops, I mean "the Bears!"
-Maybe we can petition the NFL to allow the Bears to schedule every game against Eureka College, and I'll bet we'd have a winning record
-And maybe as the Bears get worse and worse, and since some people will stop renewing their season tickets, maybe the Bears will give away vouchers for free tickets!

Feel free to add your own!

How many Super Bowls have there been? How many have the Bears played in? Not like they are a perennial powerhouse anymore.

and when the Bears attendance drops- they can move the games to a smaller stadium so it'll look fuller or maybe seem louder

Looks like Latham would sell them the Peoria Stadium.
