  • Wichita State caught cheating in their baseball program

Hmmm...wonder if it extends to any other programs???

From the details, at least 16 players received "extra benefits" or freebies thru a discount program sponsored by Under Armor...
they got a 50% discount on anything they ordered - even personal stuff and non-baseball stuff.
They got the discount only because they were athletes at WSU - and many bought hunting gear, and non-baseball items.
Eight got the "Patrick O'Bryant" penalty of being suspended 3 to 9 games, and another eight simply had to pay back the amount in question.
    (they were probably already graduated)

Funny how they use the term unintentional violations - as surely the kids ordering hunting gear using the school's 50% discount HAD to have known this was an intentional violation.

I'm fairly familiar with this situation. The kids get the discount on the baseball stuff and that's not against the rules. The discount on the non baseball stuff is against the rules.

Things have changed since Gene left and Shelley Wombacher was terminated.

These kids didn't know they weren't supposed to get the discount. Most of them were non-scholarship or partial (more non). There's no doubt that oversight under Gene was lacking. That is no longer the case. You can call it cheating if you want as ignorance of the rules is NOT an excuse, but there's really nothing to see here. We self reported it, fixed it and implemented procedures to make sure it didn't happen again.

And hang on, because Shocker baseball is officially back. The bear has been awoken and we're on our way back to being nationally relevant, sooner instead of later.

I know - just kinda using this example of something pretty minor getting noted - but it's pretty similar to what happened at BU in '05 - inadvertent benefits that the school was unaware of and self reported to investigators...
The difference here is that BU got hammered as well back in '05 but Wichita may escape any NCAA penalties - although if it were basketball, the big boys would definitely want the Shox knocked down a notch.

ZERO doubt. If this was a basketball issue, we'd probably be 50/50 to receive the death penalty.

wow - NCAA "hammers" Wichita State

          or did they --
really nobody is hurt - just a few numbers changed in the record books..
          this is a wimp-out penalty
not one actual thing that makes any difference - all the guys who cheated and got impermissible benefits get off scott free and even appear to be allowed to keep their benefits
