Up until the 2008-2009 season the Blackhawks had HORRIBLE attendance...near the bottom for a long time...then they were ok in 07-08 and bumped up to about the middle...then when they actually made the playoffs in 2008-2009 they were number 1 and have been the last 5 seasons......
So we can agree if we win in basketball attendance is nothing to worry about.
PS. There are many dumb Blackhawks fans...like with any sport...I think the sudden resurgence esp. after winning the Stanley Cup took people by surprise.

Games 2 & 3 both set records for the highest rated and most watched NHL events in the history of the NBCSports Network.
And Wednesday's Game 4, an exciting 6-5 overtime win by the Blackhawks, which was shifted back to NBC, was the highest rated game 4 of any previously televised Stanley Cup final-

It looks certain that the overall ratings will set a record for the most watched NHL Stanley Cup Finals ever. They are double the ratings and viewership of last year's finals (LA kings vs. NJ Devils)-
The combination of a marquee matchup and thrilling games has vaulted the ratings for this year’s Stanley Cup Finals, which is on pace to become the most-watched on record for pro hockey‘s championship series. According to Nielsen, Wednesday’s Game 4 between the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks — two of the Original Six teams of […]
Game 5 is Saturday night on NBC, and will likely get huge ratings as well. The game has long been sold out, but ticket prices on the secondary market are astounding. The lowest price on Stubhub or with any of the ticket-sellers is over $500.00 for "end-zone" high-row upper bowl seats, and decent lower level seats are selling for $1,500-2,000 per ticket and up. And prime seats near the ice can be had for a mere $10,000 per seat!
I guess the lockout didn't hurt fan interest much.
Here is a funny story- Hawks fans in one city missed out on the winning goal-

What a finish! Boston lead until the final 1:16 of the game and it was looking like the teams would be headed back to Chicago for a 7th game. I suspect the NHL was starting to pack the Stanley Cup back into it's case. But Brian Bickell scored with 1:16 left on a great pass from Jonathan Toews, and then 17 seconds later, Dave Bolland scored the winner.
This is the Blackhawks' second Stanley Cup in the last 4 seasons (2010 & 2013).

Amazing Finish, amazing game, amazing series, amazing playoffs, amazing season.... Way to go Hawks... Bummer for Boston...
How can you not like hockey? Speed, skill, physicality, sudden death overtime....
Make sure you get a 60" HD TV with surround sound system before the start of the Stanley Cup play offs next season!
Thanks NBC for great coverage of the playoffs/finals, next time, all games on NBC itself...
The only regret?
NO GAME 7 IN CHICAGOBUilding for the Future

The Hawks have done things right - locking in on a core group of great young players..
in this day of big salaries, salary caps, free agency - and the fact that the 15th player on the roster is way more important than in any other sport....
it's hard to keep a team together in order to remain a contender for long.
In 2010 when the Hawks won the cup they failed to resign a number of key players and it hurt them... will that happen again?

This year, they are in pretty good shape with the salary cap, and they have only a small number of less critical players that are free agents, so we will not see such a large overhaul of this year's team.
Backup goalie Ray Emery is an unrestricted free agent, and his spectacular 17-1 record and 1.94 GAA average in the regular season will earn him a nice payday from some team, but the Blackhawks won't be able to afford to re-sign him. Also, they have a couple highly regarded goalie prospects in their system that will probably play backup to Corey Crawford next year.
Their other unrestricted free agents are- Brian Bickell, Viktor Stalberg, Michal Handzus, Michal Rozsival, and Jamal Mayers.
Marcus Kruger and Nick Leddy are restricted free agents that won't be too hard to re-sign.
My guess is the Hawks will make every effort to re-sign Bickell with the money they'll save by letting the other 5 unrestricted free agents go. The Hawks have one of the most talent-filled minor league system, and they'll likely fill the other slots on next year's team with some of their young talent, and maybe a low priced free agent or two.

people do appreciate good hockey - despite vast areas of the country that don't have much hockey following -
and the fact that this season started with an interest-killing lockout....
this NHL Finals series again ranks among the most viewed ever..
The game hit a 5.6 overnight, falling just shy of Flyers/Blackhawks Game 6 and Bruins/Canucks Game 7.

Dave Bolland - the guy who scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal was traded to his hometown of Toronto for 3 draft picks - which don't count against you salary cap numbers..
Michael Frolik, also a key player in the playoffs, was traded to the Winnipeg Jets for two future draft picks.
With that much room (almost $6 million freed up) the Hawks re-signed Bryan Bickell
