  • Cubs still spending- sign Jason Marquis

The Cubs are still spending big bucks to rebuild their pitching staff. They have reprotedly signed Jason Marquis. The Chicago Tribune reports the deal is 3 years, $20 million. The St. Louis Post Dispatch is reporting the deal is worth $28 millions. Either way, a ton of money for a guy who was 14-16 last year with a 6.02 ERA and didn't make the Cardinals' post-season roster. He is 56-52 lifetime.

News about Chicago sports from the Chicago Tribune: Bears, Cubs, White Sox, Bulls, Blackhawks, Sky and more.

yeah as a cub fan i'm not really pleased about this one.. I mean this pitcher besides be a castaway from Redbird nation, isn't good. i'm for the cubs spending but this deal would just be throwing money down the toilet.

He may end up being one of their better hitters

yeah the cubs pitchers might not pitch the best but w/ Z, marquis(apparently he hits well?) if prior ever comes back in the 5th spot, Kid k(BB) hits well as well...

Dave Duncan AND Leo Mazzone couldn't figure him out. Good luck, Larry Rothschild. This is a horrible signing for the Cubs -- and I couldn't be happier.

if Marquis can get us 10 or so victories as the 4th or 5th guy, i'm ok w/ it now. the cubs overpaid, but all the pitchers have been getting to much. its about time the tribune company opened up their pockets. the cubs bullpen will be much better and i expect them to handle the cards easily in 07!

Another Cub hitter who cannot pitch! Marquis will
help insure another losing season in Cubbieland!

right now the Cards don't have 1 pitcher better than Jason let alone 5.

Scouter I agree with you, right now I couldn't be happier with the Marquis signing either. BTW-How has he done against St Louis this year?

Yeah, our best pitcher is injured (former Cy Young winner) and one of our pitchers dies, and we still have just as many wins as the Cubs, and only one more loss.

I am a Cardinals fan but when I watch this team play they seem like a lifeless uninspired bunch of old players. They are getting zero offensive production and I believe have not had a win from a starting pitcher other then Looper since mid April.

This is exactly how they played for the most part in the second half of last season. Yes they won the world series but that seems almost like an act of god.

Marquis is not a savior even if he has handled the Cardinals twice this season. But the Cubs if they could ever find any consistant hitting.. Soriano come on 1 HR and 3 RBI's, thats a joke right, but if they can get any consistancy they can get into the Central race.

I honestly think the Cardinals need a major shake up, no idea what that shake up should be but something has to happen to light a fire with this team. I dont think they have quit on LaRussa, I simply think they are stagnate.

A Cardinal fan looking for sympathy from a Cub fan in regards to injured star pitchers? Please. Try 3-4 years of your best pitchers being hurt and then come talk to me.

Using the death of a pitcher in this discussion is also quite weak.

                            Marquis today: wins

                            8 in 4 h 0 bb 5 k 1 er-W

He now moves to 4-1 with a 2.09 era on the season. How would those numbers stack up in the Cards rotation this season?

Ha Danny, I love it! we may cheer for different MVC teams but seems to me u like the cubs and hate the cards! yeah marquis is doing pretty well despite not having the "god" of pitching coaches duncan helping him out.

cards will be looking up at the cubs and apprarently brew crew all season..
