  • Another Kirk Wessler shot is misguided

In his piece today, Peoria Journal Star columnist Kirk Wessler talked mostly about the 8 ridiculous choices for mascot, Lawrence Wright, the mea culpa for his mistake about rebounding, and a couple other topics including one that has nothing to do with sports- poker.

But at the end of the column, KW does what writers try to do best, take shots at the management of sports teams. He says this--

The Chicago White Sox seem to be indicating they will replace their entire rotation of starting pitchers over the next two years. ... Foolish, and I don't think that will happen, but then, Jerry Reinsdorf is the same owner who oversaw the dismantling of the Chicago Bulls' NBA dynasty. ... So, Bulls fans, quit blaming Jerry Krause. ...

Since when is he an expert on the White Sox? And where was anything ever said or printed that they have indicated "they will replace their entire rotation of starting pitchers over the next two years". I read and follow every story about the White Sox, and I have never heard such a ridiculous thing. That will not happen. Did Kirk just make that up?
First- the White Sox have an excess of starting pitching, so it makes some sense to trade one of their starters for the talented young pitchers they just acquired in the deal for Freddie Garcia.
And second- if teams like the Cubs and Royals are willing to pay $10-11 million a year for mediocre pitchers like Ted Lilly and Gil Meche, then how much will far superior pitchers like Garcia, Mark Buehrle, Jon Garland, Jose Contreras, or Javier Vasquez cost when their contracts expire? I think the Sox are smart to try to get something for them now, rather than lose them for nothing to free agency the way the Cards will lose Suppan.

And finally, he takes a misguided shot at Jerry Reinsdorf and call him "foolish". Reisdorf is the owner who has given Chicago fans 6 basketball championships (Bulls '91, '92, '93, '96, '97, '98 ), and now has rebuilt them into a serious contender, and 1 World Series Championship (Sox '05) and they remain contenders. Thank goodness for an intelligent, dedicated owner like Reinsdorf who wants to win for the fans. How many other owners have been half as successful?
Nobody but a couple of uninformed media people try to blame the "dismantling of the Bulls" on Reinsdorf. Michael Jordan retired for good after the 97-98 season, and Phil Jackson wasn't interested in coaching without Jordan. The Bulls weren't going to win another championship without them anyway.
This stupid, gratuitous shot at Reinsdorf is really about as moronic as it gets. If the Cubs had an owner like Reinsdorf, they would probably have won Championships like the Bulls or Sox. As a Sox fan, I am grateful for people like Jerry Reinsdorf.

Maybe we should just put people like Kirk Wessler in charge of our pro sports teams, since they know so much more than anyone else about how to run them! Maybe Kirk can take over the Bulls, and teach them about offensive rebounding!
From PJ Star sports expert Kirk Wessler in his Jan. 10, 2012 column following 8th loss in a row at Drake-
"Yes, the Braves are better than they were when the season started two months ago. By a light year or two, they??™re better."

And from the PJ Star 4/26/12, Dave Reynolds-
"Fields and Grier both appear to be difference makers. If Bradley continues to add the right players around them, happy days may be ahead for the Braves after a long dry spell."

First he will have to learn what an offensive rebound is

I agree Biff. As a life long Sox fan I think they are fortunate to have the owner they have. They have aquired many big money players over the years, like Belle and Wells, who didn't work out. But at least he was willing to take the chance. I think KW just likes to stir things up. Poor sport editors do that.
What part of illegal don't you understand?
