What next, the "Ladybugs"? Whatever happened to picking a mascot or a nickname with some prestige, honor, or fearsomeness?

Likely, the new Orleans Hornets' ownership is being driven by a need to sell new merchandise, and make money, since they have to be losing money with their franchise. The Hornets are 29th out of 30 teams in home attendance and they only average 13,497 per game.

I suspect they won't last in New Orleans for long and after moving again (they moved from Charlotte in 2002) they'll surely dump this Pelican idea.

I was just thinking the same thing basically, its going to sound goofy when they move again in the near future and hypothetically become the Louisville, St Louis, NJ, Pittsburgh, or Las Vegas Pelicans.

Hey I like the name. The mascot can be Pesky Pelican Pete

Pelicans are really neat birds, especially when you see them skimming over the ocean in formation. They look prehistoric. Too bad they can't get their Jazz name back!

They aren't leaving, just got purchased by the guy who owns the Saints.

Google the state flag of Louisiana, The Pelican is badass. On the flag you will see a pelican tearing a piece of its own skin during hard times to feed its young. (Which they do).

In Conclusion, Badass mascot, with state tradition, a young talented team and an owner willing to spend the money to get them where they need to be. GO Pelicans!

Judging from Twitter responses, the majority of fans don't like the change, and the players aren't excited about it.

IF you guys didn't know Louisiana is nicknamed "The Pelican State" as Illinois is "The Prairie State"

(I used to know nearly all 50 nicknames)

And the pelican is tied for my favorite bird with the cardinal

Isn't Charlotte planning on taking the nickname Hornets back?

I thought this was part of the reasoning for this

yup - the Hornets become the Pelicans, then the Bobcats become the Hornets

                        The evolution is complete....
now that the New Orleans club has discarded the team nickname "Hornets" and become "Pelicans"...
the Bobcats have now laid claim to Hornets and have changed their name...
