Rare college football play- a 1 point safety

I did not watch this game, but last night's Fiesta Bowl game won by Oregon 32-10 over Kansas State featured perhaps the rarest play in college football- a 1-point safety. Oregon had an extra point attempt blocked. Instead of just allowing the play to end, a Kansas State player recovered it and attempted to advance the ball. However, after a lateral to another player, K-State was tackled in the end zone for a safety. The NCAA rule governing a safety on an extra point attempt defines it as a 1-point safety. It was only the second time in NCAA history it has happened.

Most of the players on both teams, and even the coaches did not that rule existed. I have to admit, neither did I.

in college football if a team is trying for a 2-pt conversion - and is intercepted and the defending team runs it 98 yards all the way back, then the defensive team gets 2 pts for the conversion - this is a rare play too.

I had remembered this from back in the day...

but in the NFL they don't allow it (right?) so I was always confused.

This happened in the Tulsa/Notre Dame game a year or two back, but not on a 2-point conversion. Tulsa blocked the PAT, and ran it back for 2 points.

I did not know it existed until Thanksgiving weekend this past year, when I saw a Facebook discussion about it, and had to look it up to confirm that yes indeed it is a rule, and it had happened in 2004 in the Texas/Texas A&M game.
