  • More District 150 turmoil

now the big wigs at District 150 - all the way up to head honcho Grenita Lathan -- are nosing into the individual sports programs
and telling the coaches what they can and can not do - even denying them the right to institute behavioral codes and hair guidelines...

note several District 150 board members - including long-time area basketball coach Terry Knapp - strongly support Coach Ruffin's
right to run his team the way he wants and oppose Lathan

it's as if Grenita Lathan doesn't have enough turmoil - as the headlines in the front page section also shows that she is totally losing control over the entire District...

..now one of the teachers she canned will have to be re-instated and the District will have to pay up because Grenita unfairly used political purposes and personal grudges to fire perfectly good teachers.
One of them is also suing Grenita & District 150..over racism charges...

BTW -- I happened to have a conversation yesterday with a long time principal in District 150 - who says their job has become impossibly burdensome because of all
of Lathan's demands -- they have endless meetings, tasks, paperwork & responsibilities - and they do the best they can because they know they can be fired or disciplined at any minute because of falling short on the impossible list of requirements.......
-- they have to meet with and evaluate every teacher and have face-to-face job performance evaluations with everyone on a literally daily basis....all the personnel crap is absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to actually accomplish even in an 80-hour week and yet everyone knows IT IS PURPOSEFULLY made to be that way - because then Grenita KNOWS that not one principal can ever do a thorough job of it, will always fall short, and thus will always have at least some provable deficiency that can be hung over their heads for whatever purposes Grenita chooses (threats, firings, demotions, extortion, and freeing up jobs that she can then use as political slush-money...)

It's a pandemic symptom of our society today. No wonder parents want to send their kids to private schools or home school them.

Also, why would anyone not sit down with this father of the boy and ask him why he believes that his kids hair is that big of a deal for a HS kid to have a respected man of the community disciplined? What is he teaching his kid or for that fact the school system? If I'm a player of that team I'd shun the kid. If he's on the same court, I'd ice him (icing a player means you do not pass him the ball). I then would take him to the side and ask him what he believes he is accomplishing. The community needs to step up! When this is all said and done this has everything to do with the profession and job of an individual.

On another note KW is writing some decent pieces this year.

This is just another example of how scr-w-d up Dist 150 is. I'm in Dan's corner 100% on this pure waste of time. I can't believe this was even an issue but, this is 150. How they think they will ever turn that district into a something alum's can be proud of is beyond me. I wouldn't send a kid to a 150 school in a million years. Not only for their tests scores but also for the people like GL who run that district. Until that district hires someone who is capable it will not change. How old is Harry? I know he's still around. Great article by KW.He said it like it is.

This day and age no matter who is in charge would make no difference. Still have the same students, if you can call them that.

Let's not throw all the kids in the same bucket...this is not a problem with the kids. It's more about the problem with the parents. It sounds like the kid knew the rules and chose not to go out....that's the way it should be...The parent however felt that was unfair......this problem is on the parents, not the kids.

Not saying I disagree with you totally but there are some good students and kids in 150 just not enough. We don't hear about the good ones just the ones that cause the problems and that is a huge problem.Dan was trying to make a difference and look what it got him. There are alot of good teachers and kids in 150 but way to many that don't want to be there and that is a major problem especially when the teachers get no backing from the administration i.e.GL. The bucks stops with her.

Not talking about this case or all the students. Talking about 150 overall.

Just heard that officers/cars were called to Manual tonight. This appears to be in addition to the officers already there. At least 2 were taken into custody from Central. Happened during the game.

From what I have heard, there were some disturbances in the audience, people also rushed the floor and the game was stopped for about 10-15 minutes. The players went into the locker room.

Just heard some more details. Sounds like items being thrown from fan section plus a fight or two. Game was stopped and someone (Carl Cannon?) threatened to have bleachers cleared if anything else happened.

sad that such incidents seem to occur so regularly...
even the newspaper coverage treats it like nothing more than a great tradition for all Manual-Central games
...just a little bit of everything that comes with the rivalry

BTW - yet another editorial slamming Dist. 150's Grenita Lathan for her policies and for her interference with the way athletic programs are run

This has been a rivalry, mostly friendly, for many, many years. As usual now days a few spoil it for everyone.

Last night was just another example of why kids are fleeing the Manual and Central programs to enroll at limestone. I wouldn't let any of my kids go to any 150 school and I graduated from one a long time ago.
