  • Northern Illinois to the Orange Bowl!

Well, it's not official yet, but according to Matt Barnes from Sports Illustrated, they will be playing Florida State in the Orange Bowl. What a great accomplishment for the mid-majors with this selection!

Now if we only know who will coach NIU in this game since Dave Doeren bolted for the N.C. State head coaching job less than 24 hours after appearing on the Score in Chicago saying he would stay at NIU! Too bad NIU is still a "stepping stone" job even after all of their success. I'm assuming it will be one of their assistant coaches who will be promoted as Doeren indicated it would.

Wow. I remember when it always seemed like the Orange bowl was the main, prime-time game to watch on NYD.

Obviously it's official now, and NIU will be playing ACC champions Florida State in the Orange Bowl. And predictably, the pundits are NOT happy with this! ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit in particular was absolutely relentless in his displeasure with NIU's inclusion. Now while there are legitimate arguments in leaving NIU out of the BCS, I don't think they are any less deserving of a BCS spot than say Oklahoma who only has one top 25 win against a marginal Texas team, albeit by 43 points. But no one is mistaking Texas for a BCS contender, and Oklahoma has no other top 25 wins, though they did lose to two top 5 teams.

I say let a conference champion who may have a slightly less desirable strength of schedule into a BCS game over a BCS team that did not even make their conference championship game! And let's also not forget that the MAC was no slouch conference this year with seven of its teams playing in bowl games this year. That should say something about NIU's strength of schedule!

Happy for my former 9th-grade student, Johnny Faustin (DB), who is a junior and will be starting for NIU in this bowl game. He is from Naples, Florida and am sure many family/friends will be there to support him!
