  • Bad For Baseball?

SF Giants pitching staff have thrown 4 consecutive shut outs, with their best starting pitcher (Matt Cain) having a chance to make it 5 shut outs in a row tomorrow (Friday). All 5 starters would have thrown shut outs....

Sports media, dominated by ESPN, hardly notice west coast teams, let alone the SF Giants.

Two teams with top 3 records in the NL go head to head for 1st place in the NL WEST and no national TV coverage?
NL Central and West Div Leaders play and no tv coverage....

Four shutouts in a row, first place run, yawn. More coverage of Wimbledon,
European Cup Soccer, NBA Draft, Tiger Woods for cripes sake.

But, if NYY, Red Sox, Phillies, Mets, Braves are in the same situation, saturation coverage by the media. NYY gets round the clock coverage for losing two starting pitchers, Giants starters go for 4 consecutive shut outs, big deal...

MLB has to decide if it truly wants to remain a national sport, or, just an east coast regional sport.

You are so right...ESPN is so biased towards the east coast and Boston in particular.

Maybe the solution is for the Giants to move back to New York?
      Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

Now that the Giants have finally taken over 1st place, they will get a little more attention from the mainstream sports media. But they still won't get much national attention or have their games on national TV unless they play the Mets. That will never change. Other teams like the Reds, Pirates, and White Sox have had very good years so far, but not many fans outside of those cities have noticed.
