  • 2012 NFL Draft- who will the Bears draft?

The 2012 NFL draft starts tonight and continues tomorrow. It has grown into one of the most watched broadcast spots events all year, and ESPN and the NFL Network will have extensive coverage.

Who will the Bears draft? Who should they draft?

Just a few years ago only a handful of sites listed "mock drafts". Now there are thousands of such sites.

Of all the mock draft sites I've checked, DE Whitney Mercilus seems to be the most common projected pick for the Bears at the 19th spot.

I think their top priority will be the defensive line (a pass rusher), followed by the offensive line, then maybe wide receiver.
The Bears' new GM Phil Emery says they are targeting about 7 specific players for their #19 pick, but as usual, they will not divulge those players.

My guess is they are looking at these prospects for their #19 pick-
Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina (will almost certainly be gone by #19)
Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame (likely will be gone by #19)
Michael Brockers, DT, LSU (if he is available, I think this will be their pick)
    Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa
    Nick Perry, DE, USC
    Chandler Jones, DE, Syracuse
    Courtney Upshaw, DE, Alabama
    Whitney Mercilus, DE, Illinois
    Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor
    Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis
    Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford

Anyone want to take a guess?

I think the Bears are locked in on a defensive player if they stay at 19th overall pick. The only offensive player I can see them taking at 19 is Michael Floyd and it is highly unlikely he will drop that far. I believe the Bears will go defensive end at 19. Quinton Coples, Chandler Jones, and even a reach with Shea McClellin would be my top 3 choices. Mercilus scares me a little with the one-year wonder thing and was a little one-dimensional last year, reminds me of a former Bears DE Mark Anderson.

Mercilus at about 260 pounds, though a freakish athlete, is severely undersized for a defensive end in the NFL.
Just listening to Hub Arkush on WSCR, he thinks they will go for an offensive lineman to give them depth and protect Jay Cutler. We all saw what happened last year when Cutler was out. Also, it is leaking out that last year's #1 pick OT Gabe Carimi, is not fully recovered from his injury that caused him to miss nearly all his rookie season.

Elvis Dumervil is a top 5 DE in the game listing at 5'11, 260. I think Merciles can be good.
That being said, I'd prefer Chandler Jones or Coples.

The Bears are looking good so far. Already in the first 10 picks, there have been several players picked high who were projected by most to go lower, which means some great players will drop and be available for the Bears.

Maybe Quinton Coples will drop all the way to 19?

DE Melvin Ingram was taken by the Chargers at #18, and the Bears took linebacker Shea McClellin of Boise State. He was not my preferred pick
. I really think they could have used off or def line help.

I think you will be pleasently suprised Coach by Shea. He might not be as flashy as some but he is a winner and a great kid. He is very versital and can play multiple positions in the NFL and in my opinion will play defensive line for the Bears.

Shea was going to be a first round pick no matter what happened tonight. If the Bears wouldn??™t of taken him at 19 someone like the Patriots or the Packers would of drafted him in the 1st round. Relax, I think everyone will be surprised by this kid once the season starts.

Bears are counting on him as a defensive end. At least that is what the Chicago Tribune is reporting.

Walter football had him listed at #23 overall. That's not much of a reach, and he doesn't have injury or character concerns. It's not a pick that I love or hate, however.
