  • Bears name Phil Emery their new General Manager

The Bears named Phil Emery their new GM. I predict this will underwhelm Bears fans and critics. He was the Director of College Scouting for the KC Chiefs, and before that worked as a scout for several other NFL teams including the Bears. Before getting into scouting, he was a strength coach at several universities.

    Typical media reaction-
The Bears decided on their new general manager after sifting through a list of names that caused no excitement, whatsoever, arriving at the perfect culmination of their tedious, uninspiring process.

Emery seems like a good hire. It's hard to get excited about a GM. We won't really know if Emery is good for several years, but I'm glad they went outside of the organization. He should be able to draft better than Angelo.

There aren't a lot of exciting GM candidates available. The Polians (Bill and Chris) are probably the highest profile candidates available, but they were also responsible for the worst team in the NFL last year. I don't think Bill wants to be a GM any longer.

Ruskell is gone from the Bears. I just didn't want to see him as GM.

I don't like it when GMs don't talk about areas of need to the media. The Bears not having good WRs or a good offensive line are not just "internal matters," they are big issues that Bears fans are aware of and care about. To pass it off as an "internal matter" is insulting.

Fans are supposed to be invested enough to buy tickets and merch, but not care about the team's roster moves? How does that make sense?

It came from story from ESPN Chicago. I should have linked it in my other post.

I like everything I've read about him in the Tribune. I'm not sure how much he should really be openly discussing anyway. He can't discuss players under contract on other teams, and it wouldn't be responsible to say that he really likes X player. If he makes good decisions and the team wins, he can be as secretive as he wants.

Wasn't Angelo hired from outside the organization?

I meant as opposed to promoting Ruskell.
