    Robin Ventura

The Chicago White Sox hired former Sox third baseman Robin Ventura as manager on Thursday, the team announced.

    Interesting!

    Didn't see this one coming....

Neither did anyone else. There were reports David Martinez (Tampa Bay assistant coach) was being interviewed. I had not heard Ventura's name.

I would have preferred someone with EXPERIENCE but Robin is a nice guy and I wish him luck.

I probably would have too, but the last CWS player that they hired to coach worked out well overall.

I can't wait for the White Sox to play the Rangers. If Ventura has to walk onto the field to go get a pitcher, Nolan Ryan may run out on the field and punch his face in again.

A strange hire. He has a relaxed and calm demeanor but having no experience makes this risky. What it does indicate is that the Sox wanted someone totally different from Ozzie's in you face attitude and over the top comments. Its very likely Guillen's personality rubbed the front office and decision makers the wrong way. They did not want anyone similar to that style. Ventura is totally different and time will tell if this was a good move. .

Kind of an interesting afterthought to this, but according to this link, Ken Williams was considering Paul Konerko as a player/manager. Interesting, but who really knows how far this thought got in the hiring process.
