  • Ozzie Guillen Traded?

It appears that Ozzie Guillen has managed his last game for the White Sox. What remains to be seen is if Ozzie is fired or traded. Possibly to the Florida Marlins.

Bob Nightengale article in USA today:

The White Sox granted Ozzie Guillen's request to be released from his contract. He managed his last game Monday night.

      No trade.

As a lifelong Sox fan, I am appreciative of Ozzie helping the Sox win a World Series, but I am ready for a change. This team has underachieved every year since the 2005 World Championship team, and especially these last 2 seasons when he has constantly tried to put himself into the spotlight ahead of his team.

Someone in Chicago is reporting that he was indeed traded to Florida for two minor league players.

Ozzie is talking at his postgame press conference, and he has confirmed the Sox statement that he was released from his contract, and is free to seek employment elsewhere. However, the Sox say they would seek compensation to allow him to manage with another MLB team.

It is suspected that Ozzie will be the Florida Marlins next manager.

          It is being reported-
Should Guillen take a managerial job with a different organization in 2012, the White Sox retain the right to be compensated. In order to fulfill that right, the Marlins will send two minor leaguers to Chicago, the source said.

Though both sides tried to deny that Ozzie was traded, that does appear to be what the end result will be. Guillen has reportedly already agreed to a deal with the Florida Marlins. We'll have to wait to see what compensation the White Sox will get.

If I am the Marlins, I am asking for more. If you want me to take an opinionated moron, with baggage, off your hands then I also need a true professional with some value to balance this out. Someone like Konerko would be fine or you would need to pay me.....a lot.

I can't believe the Marlins want someone who makes more news with his racist comments, political opinions, history of blaming others, and vulgar mouth than he does making managerial moves that wins games . Besides a few certain Sox players I doubt you hear of many players who will be upset. The media will miss him mainly because of his quotes and history of running his mouth.

His quotes they showed on ESPN tonight about money and himself were classic Ozzie. Good riddance and don't let the door hit you in the a$$ If I am Ken Williams I am making sure you take Joey Cora with you. Another total waste

I think most Sox fans agree with you. Supposedly Ozzie already has negotiated (through his agent) a 4 year deal at $4 million a year. He was only making $2 million with the Sox, and had 1 more year to go and the Sox were not willing to rewrite his deal for the $4 million he was asking for. Reports are that Cora will go with Ozzie as part of the deal.

As Mets fan who has a passing affinity for the White Sox (and a lot of exposure on The Score), I think Ozzie was a pretty good manager, but it was time for a change. I also think, though, that it was time for a change in the GM seat too...

Am I the only one who has never heard of a Manager being traded

What a bizarre ending for a very polarizing player/manager. I remember him lobbying hard back in 1997 for the Sox to pick up a 4 million dollar option, claiming that he would retire if that didn't happen. Of course when the Sox rightfully declined, he signed a 1 year/$500,000 deal with the Orioles.

I realize you have to take a lot of what Ozzie says with a grain of salt and I would love to embrace the guy, but the way he handled this is horrible. If someone is willing to pay you more money then you have every right to go out and get it, but to lobby for a contract extension while your team is falling out of the playoff picture just causes unneeded distractions.

Even with all that, I'd rather see KW go. I don't blame him for the Dunn mess, but picking up Alex Rios is just another in a long line of very bad decisions. KW has just made too many mistakes and would have been fired a long time ago if JR wasn't so loyal to him.

Manager trades have happened before, there was a recent one (last 5 years anyway) that was pretty high profile, but it's escaping me at this minute. I seem to recall a buncha rumors about a trade for GM one time, but not sure that actually went down.

                        It has happened before-
Lou Pinella left after managing the Seattle Mariners in 2002 season to take the manager's job with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. As compensation, the Devil Rays traded outfielder Randy Winn to the Mariners for infield prospect Antonio Perez. It was not exactly a straight up trade for Pinella, but it was an agreed compensation similar to what is hppening between the White Sox and Marlins.

And there was the famous trade by Charles Finley, owner of the Oakland A's in 1976. He traded his manager, Chuck Tanner, to the Pittsburgh Pirates along with cash ($100,000) to the Pittsburgh Pirates for catcher Manny Sanguillen.

After the 1967 season, the Mets sent pitcher Bill Denehy and cash to the Washington Senators in exchange for young manager Gil Hodges. Two years later, Hodges managed the Mets to their first world championship.

In 1960, Cleveland Indians general manager Frank ???Trader??? Lane, traded managers with the Detroit Tigers. Lane sent Joe Gordon to Detroit straight-up for Jimmy Dykes. It is the only time in major league history that two managers have been traded for one another.

I believe there may have been other instances in the earlier days of baseball, too.

Not a manager trade, but my favorite MLB trade occurred in 1948 when Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers traded Cliff Dapper for future Hall of Fame announcer Ernie Harwell.

I feel the same way. I'm also beginning to question KW.
