On average, September is the most active month for hurricanes, so it could get worse before it gets better.
Hurricane Irene hit the US hard last weekend, Lee is drenching the Gulf Coast states now, and Katia is on the way. There is now a 13th named storm, Tropical Storm Maria that is headed for North America.
In an average year, there are about 11 named storms, so with 13 storms already named this year, and the most active part of the hurricane season still ahead of us, this year could rival the record number of 28 named storms in 2005.
Last year (2010) tied for the 3rd most named storms with 19 storms- tying 1995 and 1887.
The only more active seasons were 2005 (2, and 1933 (21).
