The Chicago Cubs relieved Jim Hendry of his duties as vice president and general manager on Friday.

Hard to blame the GM when a team hasn't even been to a World Series since 1945. As much a non-Cub fan as I am, I can't blame him for the failure of the team. Like Ken Williams he has acquired several players with high salaries who just didn't produce as everyone, Cub fans included, thought they would.
Anyone who looked at Soriano's OBP could see he wasn't great, except Hendry. When you have the 6th biggest payroll and you're the 5th worst team in the MLB, you're doing a lot of things wrong.
If there are GM's out there who can make the playoffs with the lowest payroll, like the early 2000s A's, and this year's Brewers have the 17th highest payroll, there's obviously a lot better ways to do things.
He inherited a team that already had Wood, Pryor, Zambrano and Clement (a great pitching staff). When he got Aramis and D-Lee in 2003 and 2004 respectively, it looked like perfection. Ever since then, he's made no good moves and fallen victim to managers ruining his young aces.
Yes, he did some good things and had some bad luck, but he basically did nothing good from 2004-2011. That's pretty bad for a team with a top 5 or top 10 payroll.

I am half way through Moneyball, and I very much agree with you! Hendry (old school) vs (new school) Beane!

Not sure I would say he's done nothing good since 2004. It really snowballed from 2008 when Hendry disassembled the great team from 2008. Getting rid of key guys like DeRosa & Wood and picking up Bradley and Miles were just ridiculously bad moves. Byrd was a good pick-up and really the only decent one for the last 3 seasons.
Hiring Quade was a mistake - didn't think so at the time, but Hendry should have known better.
Not sure Quade was such a bad move, I don't know very many managers who could win big with the current team. At least Sandberg didn't tarnish his reputation for this years Cubs.
But like most people have said, the big deals to under-performing players seems like the anchor that dragged him down
At the top of the list should be someone like Andrew Friedman!

Buster Olney keeps tweeting that Pat Gilick is interested. Seeing as he built the back-to-back champion Blue Jays of the early 1990s and also built the Phillies that won it all in 08, I'd say that's a good idea.

I do not have a pony in this race and I believe the firing was way overdue! Now on Gillick. The Cubs could be so lucky on luring him to Chicago. The guy has a nose for talent and will spend the budget given to him wisely. He is a first class professional front office GM. Let's not forget what he did in Baltimore.
