The countdown to the 2011 Bradley Soccer season begins today with this tidbit on senior forward Bryan Gaul:

Bradley senior forward Bryan Gaul is one of the top professional prospects in the country, according to the debut edition of the "Joe's Big Board" feature on TopDrawerSoccer.com.

The defending MVC champions will open the 2011 regular season by visiting defending Horizon League champion Butler Aug. 26. The home opener is Sept. 1 versus former Valley rival Eastern Illinois.

After losing only two seniors, this season is going to be special. Hard to believe that a conference champion is going to get better, but they will. Can't wait for the season to start.

Problem is we also lost Aodhan Quinn, who was one of our top players. Aodhan transferred to Akron

I agree. I think this will be the year that re-establishes consistency in the BU soccer program.

Would believe the team benchmark is a return to the ncaa tourney with gaul's prospects for mls soccer draft rising as well. Did not realize A. Quinn left. After last season's personal success, was there a reason for the transfer?

Yeah, Akron is the best team in the nation and provides the best chance for him to reach his dream goal of playing professional soccer one day.

I'm guessing at 155 lbs. he's going to need to add a good 20 lbs. to achieve that dream. Sure hope the food's better in Akron...... and that he doesn't suddenly look ordinary on a great team instead of extraordinary on a good team.

Quinn sure did turn some heads here. He, Billings, Balle and Ramadani were a great core for the future of the program.

But next year still as bright as ever: that defense is going to be insane and if you have a giant like Gaul near the goal, offense comes a lot easier.

So, please help...Why wouldn't Quinn have to sit out a year with the transfer to Akron taking him out this year from playing collegiately in games?

Of course he could practice....So, why give up a year when the scouts are going to see you whether you are at BU or Akron?

The Akron site is silent on whether he can play this year....

                        Here is your answer-

scroll down to the middle of page 19-
the transfer rule about sitting out a year does not apply if it is a sport other than D1 baseball, basketball, football, and ice hockey, and as long as the athlete is in good academic standing and has been granted a release from his former school.

Here is the text from the NCAA rule book

Exceptions for Divisions I and II if you are in a four-year school
If this is your first transfer??¦
If you have never transferred before from a four-year school, you might be able to use the one-time transfer exception to play
right away at a Division I or II school.
To use this exception, you must:
                        1. Be playing a sport other than baseball in Division I, basketball in Division I, men's ice hockey in Division I or football in Division
                        I.
Note: In football you may be eligible to use this exception if:
                        a. You transfer from a Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) school to a Football Championship Subdivision
(formerly Division I-AA) school and have at least two seasons of competition remaining; or
                        b. You transfer from a Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) school that offers athletics scholarships to a
Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) that does not offer athletics scholarships.
                        Important Note:
If you do not qualify for this exception due to any of the conditions in Subsection 1 above, you may
be able to use the exception if you were not recruited by your first four-year school AND have never received an athletics
                        scholarship.
                        2. Be in good academic standing and making progress toward your degree;
                        3. Have been considered eligible if you had stayed in your first school; and
                        4. Have a written release agreement from your first school saying that it does not object to your receiving an exception to
the transfer residence requirement. If your request for a written release is not provided within seven business days of the
previous institution receiving the request, the release shall be granted by default and the previous institution shall provide
a written release to you. Further, if the release is denied, you may be entitled to a hearing conducted by an institutional
entity or committee outside of the athletics department (e.g., the office of student affairs; office of the dean of students; or a
committee composed of the faculty athletics representative, student-athletes and nonathletics faculty/staff members).

Thanks Da Coach for the information. I didn't realize that the 1 year sit wasn't applicable to D1 soccer...with an approved release....

Certainly fans should be excited about BU soccer's chances on building their resume with WINS this year. Glad to see this program continue to shine....

You mean our very best player just up and leaves to go play for someone else because that's what's maybe best for him?
Can anyone recall this ever happening before in a setting where no coaching or program changes occurred?
I have to think there's more to this story.
Didn't we just have a basketball player or two do something similar in the midst of a complete changeover in coaching staff (something that actually does happen all the time) then get ripped to shreds by certain fans??

I'm sure someone somewhere is saying "Break a leg Aodhan".
