  • OT - A new Country is Born

With the political discussions that pop up here from time to time, I thought I'd mention something fairly non-partisan but at the same time, a harrowing but hopeful event none the less. This morning, the Republic of South Sudan was born as a new legal nation here in Africa. Tensions between north and south Sudan are still extremely high, but there is a lot of hope that this could be the first major legislative steps to finally putting an end to the myriad of conflicts and bloodshed that have defined this region for so long.

I had thought this already happened, but thank you for posting the news! Best wishes to the newly formed South Sudan!
... At the end, of the storm, there's a golden sky. And the sweet silver song of the lark. Walk on, through the wind, walk on, through the rain, though your dreams be tossed, and blown. Walk on, Walk on with hope in your hearts, and you'll never walk alone!

You are right, the vote was a couple months back. Today is the formal declaration of independence.

unfortunately almost all the military power and resources are in the north so the new nation South Sudan is very vulnerable and as we speak, raiders from the north are crossing the borders, terrorizing the new citizens in the south and committing genocide, killing them in a racially and ethnically motivated fashion...

The birth of a nation is a painful process. We had to fight an all out war, and probably would have lost without the French, to get ours. Godspeed to those people trying to make a better life for themselves.

I would hope that the world community would step up to the aid of South Sudan. Besides the USA and France, no one else is doing much to ensure the safety and the realization of a prosperous nation is forthcoming. As T has pointed out these raids are going on continuously and because South Sudan does not have any natural resources we can expect the world community to keep their hands clean. Where is the UN? I thought this was one reason there is a UN mission. I surely do not expect our country to do much more then what we are already doing. We cannot keep being the givers of the world when we have a ton of work right here in our own backyard.

The Old capital of Sudan lies in the North obviously, and those in the south fighting for independence were see as a pure insurrection. For the North, losing the south is a significant blow - as the south is home to the vast majority of Sudan's oil fields. The differences between north and south were too great to maintain one state, now time will tell how two states can fare.

South Sudan, the world's newest country, is still a long way from functioning like a real country. They don't have much of a government, let alone the daily things countries all have like currency, stamps, a court system, etc.

But it seems their top priority is getting a national soccer team together and playing their rival neighboring countries.

Hehe, I would probably put national team ahead of stamps, but courts and currency are a good thing. I have however never lived in warzone for a decade, mayhaps they think instilling national pride is the best way to help alleviate some of the in-fighting within their borders. I would probably work on that currency/court thing first thou.
