Are you being serious? If you only make $25K a year but have 6 kids, how in the he!! are you going to feed, clothe, etc. them and yourself? Not to mention find a place to live, pay taxes, pay for insurance, healthcare, etc. If you dont think kids have anything to do with median household income, you are just plain ignorant IMO. Or you are just Naive

Someone with a salary of $25K is less likely to even take care of themselves let alone kids.

Does anyone on this board know when and why we pay a federal income tax? At one point in time there was no federal income tax and it was not too long ago.

I'm in Saluki's camp and am for a flat rate tax with zero loopholes. I'd even do away with capital gains tax and perhaps if done right eliminate the federal income tax for an excise tax as long as the essentials like food, shelter and clothing are worked into the scheme to be exempt to a certain amount per person.

You are entitled to believe Fox News is an ultra-right wing news organization. I would not agree. I believe they are the one news organization that is not severely biased to the left. That may be why people who like the liberal ideas expoused by every other news outlet think they are too conservative. But I see both liberal and conservative commentators on every Fox program. I rarely see anything resembling a conservative on NBC, MSNBC, CNN, CBS, ABC, and especially NPR.
I am not upset about my post being deleted. In the end this is a message board and I have far more important things that I need to worry about as compared to a post deletion. It still gives me a laugh though. As for NPR, take a look at the University of Maryland poll released last December about voter misinformation. NPR audiences were found to be among the least misinformed on basic questions of fact. Check out which audiences rank among the most misinformed about basic factual information....

Once again, this illustrates my point about median wage stagnation that has existed for middle class families since 1979.

Please, surveys like that one, done by a noted liberal group, can be biased so easily they are rarely reliable. And just who's judgement of "informed" was used to do that survey?

I can find as many or more "surveys" that show just the opposite.

How does this have anything to do with median household family income? My household income has exactly nothing to do with how many children I have.

WHAT??? Federal income tax has been around for 150 years in the US... And really for millenia - Roman citizens gave grain, or coin, or a percentage of whatever they produced.

The only reason income taxes were not needed before the civil war was because of the heavy taxing on imports (which began at the drafting of the constitution), which has been shown to be FAR worse on the modern economy than income taxes.

                          Read this http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0005921.html

For the most part federal taxes were collected on distilled spirits and other mass consumed items.

"In 1913, the 16th Amendment to the Constitution made the income tax a permanent fixture in the U.S. tax system. The amendment gave Congress legal authority to tax income and resulted in a revenue law that taxed incomes of both individuals and corporations. In fiscal year 1918, annual internal revenue collections for the first time passed the billion-dollar mark, rising to $5.4 billion by 1920. With the advent of World War II, employment increased, as did tax collections??”to $7.3 billion. The withholding tax on wages was introduced in 1943 and was instrumental in increasing the number of taxpayers to 60 million and tax collections to $43 billion by 1945."

Prohibition wiped out the ability for the feds to collect funds so they found another way to collect taxes. This then created a stronger federal government.

Nothing against you Braves4life, but I am not certain what was more interesting.. Reading this article, or making a peanut butter sandwich. The author had several interview sessions and most of the first three pages were about his Blackberry?

edit to clarify: First three pages bordered on hagiography. Last few pages had some interesting aspects to them. jmho

I think we are just arguing two different points. Mine is, and I think you knew all along what I meant, is if someone doesn't have much, if any, income don't expect me and other working people to take care of them for you.

In short is if you cannot afford it or are receiving assistance from others refrain from any unnecessary spending. The only necessary things are food, shelter and appropriate clothes.

We also need to weed corporate America from their welfare programs. http://www.cato.org/pubs/handbook/hb111/hb111-26.pdf

The Cato Institute is a conservative think tank, which for 98% of the time, I agree with. It is easy for politicians to go on the rampage against those that vote very infrequently and they know they can get a ton of mileage from but they would never talk about the pork they add to bills for those corporate friends of theirs that can raise 100's of thousands of $$$$.
