  • Bears may trade 1st round draft pick

The NFL draft is Thursday, April 28. The Bears own the 29th spot in the first round. But they expect most of the players they want to be drafted by then, so there is a strong possibility they could trade their pick in the first round according to Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune-

It won't happen, but IMO, they should move up in this draft by trading Devin Hester, maybe another player, plus their 29th pick.

Under the terms of the lockout, no current players can be traded.

And why in God's name would you trade Devin Hester???????

First of all I have to admit that I am not a Bears fan.. My reason for trading Hester is that I think that his value will never be higher than it is at this time. I don't think that Hester is a very good wide receiver therefore in my opinion, he is more of a one dimensional player to the team. Albeit a darn good one... The NFL just voted to move the kickoff from the 30 to the 35 yard line which IMO will result in more touchbacks. Therefore I think that Hester's value will likely decrease and I think that the Bears should test the market to see what they can get out of Hester. The Bears could certainly use a higher draft pick, but I don't know the quality of the upcoming draft. I can't remember the guys name, but the Bears have another player who is also very good at handling punt and kick returns... Just my opinion but I doubt that it will ever happen...

Jerry Angelo doesn't seem to like drafting in the first round. It drives me crazy.

The Bears need a 1st rounder. WR, OL, CB.

If I'm a Bears fan, I'm sick of 5th round talent that get played like they're 1st or 2nd talent.

Cutler's not gonna carry this team, they need a consistent receiver.

Angelo is horrible at drafting in the first round. His first round picks are as follows: 2008 Chris Williams, 2007 Greg Olsen, 2005 Cedric Benson, 2004 Tommie Harris, 2003 Michael Haynes and Rex Grossman...

Chicago needs a better OL. Both tackles are weak. A #1 WR would be great, but it's hard to find that level of talent at #29. I think they will trade down. Angelo is not a good GM. Take a look at the 07 draft class. http://www.databasefootball.com/draf...?tm=chi&lg=nfl

It's hard to find a good example of a team that consistently is out of the first round having legitimate success, the one that comes to mind is the Patriots. Although, having Tom Brady handicaps the entire draft staff quite a bit.

The Bears can't keep "Yankeeing" it by signing the big name free agents.
When 2 of your best 3 players are, quite frankly, another team's trash- that's an issue, and a costly one at that. Peppers is a little different, but still, there's a reason everyone hates the Yankees. I think the Bears are the best example of it in the NFL...minus the rings.

I can't think of another team in recent memory who has traded for another team's "franchise" quarterback. Denver didn't let him go for asking for too much money, there was a reason he was on the market. Maybe Cutler has a good career and the Bears got really lucky. But sooner or later, the Bears need some of their own talent.

Washington is typically the team that signs the big-name free agents. NY Jets have often done it as well. Last year was the first year I can remember when Chi signed the top FA. You can't miss as often as Angelo has in the first round and expect to be successful. He has done better in later rounds with skill players, but the O and D-lines are built at the top of the draft.

Green Bay first round: 05 Rodgers, 06 AJ Hawk (meh.), 07 Justin Harrell (miss), 08 Jordy Nelson, 09 BJ Raji and Clay Matthews, 10 Bryan Bulaga (?).

The new kickoff rule will not make much of a difference for Hester. His bread and butter are punt returns, which are the majority of his returns. It will hurt Josh Cribbs who has reurned more kickoffs for TD's than Hester. Hester even split the kickoff returning duties with Daniel Manning last year and still had an amazing year. So I do not think the new rule will change the Hester's ability to be an impact player for the Bears. His punt returning ability is rediculous and will continue to force other teams to punt away or out of bounds against the Bears.
