  • WCBU reporting that Gatehouse offering to buy out PJ Star editorial staff

"GateHouse Media is offering...all union members who work on the editorial
side of the Peoria Journal Star. That includes non-managerial reporters, editors
    and photographers."

so -- what's going to happen -- who's gonna run the paper?? Does this mean no more editorial offerings?

Notice this is only on the editorial side. These employees generally bring very little to the table and tend to alienate subscribers. If we want editorials we have plenty of national or internet outlets to feed us this.

I would not be surprised to ultimately see some kind of a regional paper that has beat reporters in Canton, Peoria, East Peoria, Morton, etc. This would allow for a consolidated paper that makes more profit by combining the current advertisers in each area. Who knows.

No matter how it is spun, this is actually very bad news........

the stories repeatedly list reporters, editors, photographers...this may foreshadow bankruptcy which will be easier if there are fewer people to negotiate with......

whenever this action has occurred in the past....it was purely to try to reduce the number of layoffs and salary cuts that are coming next...

within the last couple years...the list of newspapers that folded after trying to lay people off and offer buyouts is impressive...

The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News both declared bankruptcy
The entire Journal Register chain filed bankruptcy
The Rocky Mountain News closed..AFTER offering BUYOUTS to their employees
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer is currently in bankruptcy and "doomed to fold"
Hearst Publications has said it will also close the San Francisco Chronicle after first offering buyouts..

In just a 3 month span in 2009, 33 major daily newspapers filed for bankruptcy - most offered early deals and buyouts to employees..

Read the latest headlines, news stories, and opinion from Politics, Entertainment, Life, Perspectives, and more.

The owners of The Star-Ledger announced today they will sell the newspaper if they cannot win union concessions and persuade a large number of non-union, full-time workers to take buyouts in the next two months. The owners set a deadline...

This is not a good era to be in the local news business.

But it is problematic, because without some local oversight in the media, i am afraid corruption will become more rampant.

Not saying in Peoria, just overall

Have you not noticed the actions of bloggers in calling out cheaters in college sports -- such as USC, UConn, etc...
I think the press is so biased and totally in someone's pocket nowadays that they have forfeited any rights to the claim of being guardians of society...

I think it the real freedom that people now have and not just the abusive and arrogant people in the press who all think they are above the law and are more righteous than everyone else (recall editorials about "steaming pile", Weber using the "N-word", and editors condemning readers and calling them racists for their own opinions)...
the real power is in the hands now of the everyday person...like you and me...we can all say what we believe...and even though there's some potential for abuse, there's also the potential as was shown in Egypt, for people's opinions to finally have the kind of power they should have -- power to even overthrow oppressive forces.
And it is obvious from all the articles in the media condemning the average person and his blogging and posting opinions that the standard media guys clearly don't like it!

I have absolutely no faith in the press any more....they are so biased, so slanted, so motivated towards their goals and agendas.

I think the people in the "standard media" have made their own beds and now they don't like the feeling of lying in them.
They have abused their position as a Constitutionally protected force for the people...and now the people themselves are stepping up and doing it.

I agree and it is sad. You just need to look at who owns that the national media. There are only 5 major players. Editorial staff no longer have the freedom to discuss the issues they find important but what the paper deems self interest for their advertising dollars.

A number of long time PJ Star people are taking the buyouts a quitting...

The business editor Paul Gordon just posted this column a few minutes ago, saying..
"This is my last column as business editor of the Journal Star. My last official
day on the job is Friday, March 18.
I decided the time was right for me to accept the buyout offer tendered to me
and other newsroom personnel by GateHouse Media, the Journal Star's parent
                company."

Earlier this morning, columnist Terri Bibo signed off...
"Getting out while the getting's good"

In case you want to know what's in store and how they're going to make more money off you in the future...

Here's a story on how the "first of the Gatehouse family of newspapers" is now charging for viewing their online material..

"(We) ..are looking for alternative ways to recoup some of the costs of gathering and publishing our local news content.
Many of our readers already pay for content through subscribing to the print edition or e-edition
..The publication is one of the first owned by the company to adopt a subscription model for its website."

also -- Gatehouse reported yet another loss last year

and also just canned their national "Media Director"
