Turning into a storybook finish for the SF Giants...
10 games out of first place, in fourth place in their Div in August. Having to win on the last day of the regular season to make the playoffs. Now halfway to winning their first World Series since relocating to San Francisco.
Can't remember a World Series game where:
*7 runs after 2 outs
*4 consecutive walks lead to 2 runs
Time for the SF Giants to exorcise their WS Demons:
1962 vs. New York Yankees. The Giants appear in their first World Series since moving from New York in 1958. They face the New York Yankees and lose the series four games to three. The Giants out hit the Yankees in the series as well as out pitch them but still manage to lose the series in seven games. The Giants lost game seven of the series by a score of 1 to 0. In the decisive game seven the Giants have the tying and winning runs on base in the 9th inning but Willie McCovey lines out to second base to end the series and give the New York Yankees the World Series title.
1989 vs. Oakland A's. The Giants advance to the World Series for the first time since 1962 when they defeat the Chicago Cubs in the National League Championship Series. They face their bay area rivals the Oakland A's who are making their second consecutive World Series appearance. The A's would win the first two games in Oakland. The series shifts back to San Francisco and just before game three an earthquake hits the Bay Area. The game is postponed and the series is delayed for ten days due to the massive damage caused by the earthquake. When the series resumes the A's continue their dominance and win the next two games to sweep the series in four games. The Giants never lead in the series.
2002 vs. Anaheim Angels. The 2002 World Series marks the first time that two Wild Card teams reach the World Series. The two teams split the first four games of the series. The Giants than win game five 16 to 4 to take a three games to two series lead. In game five the Giants have a 5-0 lead in the seventh inning and look poised to win their fist World Series since arriving in San Francisco. But the Angels rally to score six runs over the next two innings to win the game and send the series to a decisive seventh game. The Angels win game seven 4 to 1 to take the series. Barry Bonds of the Giants hits four home runs in the series while hitting .471.
Fortunately the Series moves to Texas where the chance of an earthquake screwing things up for the G men is low!
Great pitching beats great hitting! Go Giants!
