  • World Series nightmare matchup

I know the SF and Texas fans love it..
but the potential of a Texas vs San Francisco matchup in the World Series must have the network, advertisers, and MLB worried about just who's gonna bother to watch..

Both markets are among the smallest in Major League baseball, and any of the night games, especially out in San Francisco are going to be starting so late that they'll bomb two-fold on the east coast, since nobody out east will care much for either team involved and they sure won't stay up to 10 or 11PM to even see the start of the games on the opposite coast.

But there's apparently even more to this story -- as even the games that involved the Yankees have been surprisingly BIG flops....I guess all the overkill of hearing about ARod, Jeter, steroids, etc...24/7 has burned out the rest of the nation and the Yanks just don't interest as many people outside the Big Apple any more.

Monday's example -- a boring, 30-3 blowout Monday Night FB game between the two worst-market NFL teams, Tennessee & Jacksonville (last place team) -- that had only half the viewers that most Monday Night games generally have, still outdrew the playoff game between the Yankees & Rangers by 15% in the ratings.
Monday night's rerun of Pawn Stars on History cable actually had more than half the audience the Yanks/Rangers baseball game had!!
    ..but Dancing beat them all...

Actually, San Francisco and Texas play in top 10 media markets. I won't argue that the Yankees or the Phillies have more appeal, but I would not consider the teams "small market" in that sense. I am sure that there will be folks who tune in, myself included. Let's get some new blood in the Fall Classic, I say.

A global leader in audience insights, data and analytics, Nielsen shapes the future of media with accurate measurement of what people listen to and watch.

Now, what would be a definite cause for worry among the networks is if the World Series was between the Padres and the Reds. Both teams do play in large markets, but do not have the population that North Texas and the Bay Area have.

I could be wrong, but I think that when the Mets and Yankees played each other in the World Series several years ago, the TV ratings for that series were the lowest ever. Because of the constant media hype on all things in the northeast, a good portion of the rest of the nation dislikes all New York and New England teams.

I can't speak for anybody else, but I would be much more likely to watch a Texas/SF series than a NY/Phillie series.

New teams in the World Series is good for the sport yet bad for the sponsors, I like it plus Major League baseball needs a salary cay otherwise the Yankees will go out and spend even more money trying to buy another championship , the playing field needs to be leveled.

I would love to see a Texas v. San Fran WS.

The Yankees and their payroll are outrageous. How can you not win every year with that lineup?

Several years ago baseball tried to hold the salaries down and they got taken to court for colusion. So I can't blame the Yankees, or any team with the money, for trying to get a winner. I personally wanted the Yankees and Reds in the WS. Joe G is a local area guy who went to Spalding as did I and my cousin is an announcer for the Reds.

OK Giants winning would be great being that I'm local. The town is having a blast even with the loss tonight. The bars will be packed early on Saturday all day. Now most people here say, "yea TX would be neat but they'd rather play and beat the Yanks!"

BTW...a work colleague went to the game tonight and paid $800 for his ticket.

I am happy Texas won -- but this morning, just about all you can find are articles on New York and all about how the Yanks are going to restructure and be back next year!!

Do those media people out east ever consider that the rest of the nation is kinda sick of hearing about the Yankees endlessly?

Lee vs Cain game 1! Giants have a great young pitching staff against a Texas team with a bunch of professional hitters. Should be a great series and a ton of fun in SF.

By vitrue of the NL winning the All Star Game, Giants will have home field advantage, which will LIMIT Texas' use of a DH....GIANT advantage....

It also allows Giants to get Renteria, Sanchez, Uribe AND either Rowand, Fontenot or Kung Fu Panda in the batting order in Texas (along with Burrell, Torres, and Huff).

Now that Sanchez and Bumgarner have playoff major pressure 'gacking' experience (PMPGE syndrome) under their belts (along with Posey), optimistic better outings ahead in the WS.

Cain and Lincecum can win 3 of 7, so need 1 from Sanchez or Bumgarner....
