  • All Together Now...PROCESS

What a terrible win. Clearly a touchdown. Bears got saved. This is going to be a long season if the Bears play like this all season.

I agree...even as a Bears fan I say that was a clear TD catch! 4 tries from the 1 yd line and you cannot score you don't deserve a W!

Here is an article with a video clip of the controversial no-TD call-

and here is a more complete explanation of the ruling-

I understand all we will talk about in this game is "The Call" but I have a coaching question.

If you kick a field goal in the 1st quarter on 4th and 1 (on the 1 yd line), then why don't you kick a field goal in the 4th quarter on 4th and 1 (on the 1 yd line)? 4th quarter FG puts you in the lead. If def holds after the field goal and you score that next touchdown..... we are not talking about "The Call"

the NFL rule is similar to the rule in baseball that if a player catches the ball and falls, and the ball squirts out of his glove, then it is NOT a catch...

How many times have we heard this NFL rule stated as "the ground cannot cause a fumble"...
well that means if a runner has possession and falls to the ground then he's down,
but a receiver if he loses the ball on contact with the ground in the process of the catch --
then it's NOT a fumble (implying that he previously had possession) it is an INCOMPLETION.

Here is an almost identical play from a year ago -- in which the receiver catches the ball and only do you see on the replay that as he hit the ground,
the ball pops loose for a tiny instant, but in the end the refs got the call right and rules an incompletion.
The ruling on Louis Murphy’s non-touchdown catch violated the “looks-funny” rule. it looked like a touchdown. And it “looked funny” not to call it a touchdown.

This is the reason why Lovie needs to leave chicago and a real coach needs to show up.

Using your baseball analogy, how many times have you seen an outfielder catch a ball and then lose control of the ball in the process of taking the ball out of the glove to make a throw to try to get a runner out and the call remains an out! That is a "process" situation as well and I have seen this quite a few times throughout the years at the mlb level.

The current "NFL process rule" is a stupid rule that needs to be rewritten or done away with as the results have cheapened the game. jmho

no, no, no, because if he loses control as he takes it out of his glove, then he is willfully releasing the ball in order to make the throw....
PLUS it doesn't involve the ground or the fence....

...just like if he catches the ball then with the gloved hand flips it into the stands for some kid as a souveneir...it's still an out because he released it willfully...
but if it falls from the glove while hitting the ground or the fence, then it is NOT released willfully and it is NOT a catch even if it was in his glove for 5 seconds...look it up...
