How about our local guy He is now tied with Frank Robinson for 8th in all time HRs If someone had a pair at the top of MLB, three of the ones ahead of Jim would be eliminated, removed from MLB for ever and their records removed because they are juicers and cheaters They booted Pete and in my book they are worst than him This would make Jim a legitimate at #5

8th on the all time list and Ozzie couldn't use him. He said he would boycott the all star game in Phoenix next year because of SB1070. Don't worry Ozzie you won't be managing the all star team.
What part of illegal don't you understand?

Ozzie is a moron for alot of different reasons. His opinion and stance on many issues are unbelievable. From free agents, trades, Latin players, steroids, Arizona, Hugo Chavez, his vulgar mouth etc. Even his son, Oney, has been a problem for Chicago. Its just one thing after another. His act is real tired and I hope Kenny Williams makes a move this off season. After a while, it has to be mentally draining on Williams to have to comment on all of Ozzies blunders and quotes. Do yourself, Chicago, and MLB a favor. Send him on his way. Give him the ol "we are going to go in another direction. " "We wish you the best." Can anyone honestly say that when they think of the good managers in baseball that his name pops into your head? And when they do they can unload Joey Cora with him....

Thome on the other hand is all class. !st ballot HOF with many off the field awards. Respects the game, his teamates, his peers, and fans. That is why he is among the most respected players in the game. You never hear his name associated with steroids. The 3 players ahead of him who are guilty should get nothing. No recognition, no HOF, nothing. They cheated the game.

probably I'd agree with Ozzie on no more than 1% of all topics, and I agree he is loony at times, but he is one of the characters, like Leo Durocher, Billy Martin, Casey Stengel, etc...that make baseball more fun. Say what you want about Ozzie, but 95% of the White Sox fan base will always appreciate him.....

Thome is a great guy and no doubt a class act. However in this era of MLB baseball, the stigma will always be there. He is a certain HOF'er barring any steroid use but I don't think he is a first ballot HOFer.

and T, I agree with you. Ozzie is a much needed character for MLB.

lol We can agree to disagree. I think that a first ballot HOF'er is someone who was dominant in their era. IMO first ballot HOF'ers are someone like a Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Stan Musial, or a Hank Aaron type of player. I don't think that Thome, while a very good player, is at the first ballot status. I think that some voters will look at Thome's stats as being inflated by him being a DH. Also keep in mind that greats such as Joe Dimaggio, Jimmie Foxx, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, and Harmon Killebrew had to wait for the second ballot to be enshrined into the HOF. All except Killebrew, IMO were much better players than Thome.

I agree that baseball needs characters. It makes the game interesting. But many "characters" earned that title with their humor, quirky mannerisms, on field arguments with umpires, etc. Most of their actions are an act and in real life they are normal. Not many use the platform like Ozzie.

If he did more stuff like when he complains about the Cubs (now thats funny)or comments about the size of rats in stadiums. The kind of stuff that is baseball related. Imo that is how you become a baseball character. I think he has crossed the line to much and has become an idi0t.

I was in the Army in DC during Killebrew's last season there. He was a good 3rd baseman then and we all looked forward to his high, never a line drive, homers. Jim is a sure HOF, but he isn't a better player than Killebrew was.

The DH rule allows certain players to stay in the majors for many extra years...sometimes as many as 5 or 10 extra years beyond when they might have ordinarily become subs, bench players, or retired...
thus allowing DH's like Frank Thomas & Jim Thome to amass a HUGE amount of additional career stats that everyday position players, and those who never got the benefit of the DH rule (career NL'ers or guys from 1890 through 1970) would not have the same opportunity to amass.
As much as I love Jim Thome and Frank Thomas, they benefitted greatly by the DH rule and might not have HOF numbers without it....

Consider this...what if the NBA changes rules such that every time a team is awarded a free throw, they are allowed to substitute their "Designated Free Thrower" (DFT).
Thus this one guy, hired and on the roster for only ONE purpose, steps to the line and shoots every FT..every game, all year long.
In time the guy would set all kinds of FT shooting records, and quite possibly career scoring records as well....
Guys like Steve Kerr would have lasted an extra 15 years in the NBA and added extra 20 ppg for that span - giving him a career scoring total of 27,000 pts!!!
If all this happened, would his records sit side by side with Kareem Abdul Jabbar's and Michael Jordan's or would there be an asterisk???

Agree T. BTW Edgar Martinez needs to be included on this list as he has had some HOF votes and consideration. One aspect about the HOF voting and the DH is that the voters are slow to adapt to changes in the game. Look at the relief pitchers who have been inducted into the HOF in recent years.

Can't argue about the DH allowing some players to lengthen their careers and stats, but only if they PRODUCE and are a Benefit/Help to their team If Jim or Frank didn't do both I think we all would agree they would be gone T, as for your NBA example, surely you could of come up with a better one Being a DH sitting on the bench waiting to bat against different pitchers every night and some games more than 2 or 3 a night, throwing every pitch in the book(including 95mph+ fast balls, plus the chance of being hit by one) don't even come close to shooting free throws Gee's, Come on Man

Bill "Moose" Skowron -- was in the booth and interviewed by Hawk and Darrin just a couple weeks ago during a televised Sox game -- still a great, witty mind, and had a whole lot to say about "modern" ballplayers.

The Yankees are the AL team that I follow. I am primarily a Cubs fan. Moose Skowron was a little before my time, but I like to read about the history of MLB and have read a lot of stories about Skowron and the Yankees.

Speaking of who should or should not be in the HOF, since I was fortunate enough to talk to Bob Feller in the mid 1980's, I am convinced that Cecil Travis should be voted into the HOF! Feller thought that Travis was one of the best hitters of his era! You may not have heard of him, but his story is very compelling and I think very deserving especially considering the attitudes of the modern players.
