  • Ken Griffey reportedly sleeps through pinch hitting chance

Maybe time to retire? Seattle Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu wanted to picnh hit with ken Griffey Jr. in a game last week, but he wasn't in the dugout. A couple other players looked for him and found him asleep in the clubhouse.
Seattle Mariners star Ken Griffey Jr. missed a chance to enter the game as a pinch hitter because he was asleep in the clubhouse, according to a report from the Tacoma News Tribune.

Ha - he's in the company of legends....
Later in his career....the Yankees had a "Babe Ruth Day" for the greatest Yankee of all time,
but the Babe showed up too drunk to play and had to sleep it off.....
but finally entered late in the game.....
It's detailed in the 2nd paragraph here.......

      I really like Griffey but...........

Ever wonder how he got sidetracked from potentially being the greatest player to ever play the game? Before steroids were ever being mentioned Griffey was tearing it up until...... the injuries started...... year after year after year. He's never been painted with that brush but doesn't steroid use lead to tighter muscles and ligaments and fragility in some cases?

It's funny (and sad) how all these guys (Boone, McGuire, Sosa, Palmeiro, Ortiz, et. al.) suddenly went from superhuman to hurt or just disappearing.

Don't players i.e. Edison Volquez use steroids to recover from injuries because they help muscles rebuild faster, no make them more fragile. Either way I see no reason why a person like Griffey should be linked to anything involved with steroids. As far as sleeping goes, old time bullpen pitchers will tell you they used to sleep through the first 6 innings or play card games during the game. The major issue is whoever these two young bucks who went to the media with this story are need to be put in their place and realize that they're a family and there's no room for snitches.

I agree with the second half DeltaBrave. If these 2 young punks are found out their name is mud in the clubhouse.

Regarding steroids, you are partially right in that they help people recover from injuries. However, I believe prolonged usage can lead to inelastic muscles and injuries.

Is there a doctor in the house that can confirm?

the science on this is strongly debated...kinda like medical marijuana...

one side says the benefits are marginal to non-existent while the abuse potential is enormous...

while the other side says you can heal muscles fatser and possibly stronger with steroid use...although even these proponents concede the strong abuse potential AND that while the muscles may heal stronger, that the connective tissue such as tendons and ligaments DO NOT get stronger with steroids - and may even heal weaker, leading to way more torn tendons and ligaments...

Is this kind of story just a coincidence - say in baseball - where repeatedly torn & strained tendons in the legs were virtually unheard of until the past decade or two??
Barry Bonds' injured his legs, hamstrings, and tendons several times, but, then so did Griffey, in the later years of their careers....

Here's a couple pics of the changes in Bonds' physique...

            From the 1980's

            After 2000...

I completely get the whole what goes on in the clubhouse stays in the clubhouse.

But it is never right for a position player who has not played to be sitting in the clubhouse taking a nap during a game. I dont care who he is or was. If your that bored or disinterested... retire.

You can't defend jr. and blame the two "young bucks". Stay awake jr. like the rest of the "family".
What part of illegal don't you understand?
