NBC has been showing their Olympic coverage on the West Coast on a tape delay and that is most likely going to continue with the Gold Medal game.

The NHL comissioner Gary Bettman is reluctant to agree to NHL participation in the 2014 Olympics. Many think it won't happen.

2014 is in Sochi, Russia, and it would be a far greater problem for the NHL players to participate there as compared to an NHL city like Vancouver.
The NHL might not decide until at 2012 or later whether it's going to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said Thursday no decision is imminent about possibly shutting down for two weeks to accommodate an Olympics in which some games would be played in the middle of the night in North America, thus affecting TV viewership and interest.

Why would they do it?? The league is not getting much exposure from this anyway. They have a league deal with NBC, but the games get moved to CNBC and MSNBC?????

Just another blunder by NBC. Their coverage of sports over the last 20+ years is nothing but a comedy of errors, led by the great Dick Ebersol. Here's an article summing up the epic failure that is NBC Sports.

Even with the channel issues i would still say that US-Canada game got a truck load of exposure, which is good for hockey in general, as much of the US couldn't care less about the NHL as it is. A lot of the big names have said if the NHL isn't going to acquiesce to the break they will just leave anyway. I would move it to standard television, but I think you are just asking for trouble from players if you wont let them leave for Olympics. I say get over it NHL and let them play for their country.

I'm no fan of NBC and I think the tape-delay is stupid, but who can't get MSNBC these days?

What kills me about it was that they had a game with the Czech Republic I think it was on regular nbc earlier in the day, but then for the marquee North American showdown of these games, you have to go to the cable channel.

..not sure about that. MSNBC does seem to be fairly standard (although I'm not sure about cable digital packages. I guess USA might be more standard than MSNBC, though?). I think the big issue(as mentioned earlier) is that MSNBC is not in HD on every provider, and placing major games that cannot be seen in HD by most is a major problem in today's world.

It was the Czech - Russia game and that was also taped delyed out here in the west coast. If I'm the NHL I'd pull out also and suggest a World Cup like format. Everything here in the west coast is taped delayed except the bobsledding. I'm not sure what they are trying to do. Ratings would have been so much better on Sunday if they showed the US-Canada game on NBC.

I know they must have some sort of research on what certain demographics watch. I also know that it did not involve the US. Last night having Xcountry skiing and arial skiing on NBC instead of the Canada vs. Russia hockey was equal to putting the superbowl on MSNBC and Puppy Bowl on NBC.

Now the IOC has another hockey controversy-
The will investigate what happened after the Canadian women's hockey team beat the US women for the gold medal-
One hundred years provides more than several lifetimes full of highlights, some lowlights, and many memories. Here’s a look at 100 years of the Western Golf Association and the Western Open. …

according to reports, after the women went to the locker room, they returned to the ice and skated around drinking beer from cans and champaign from bottles, while some smoked cigars.

in some circles, this is sufficient proof that those players are men, not women, and thus they should have their medals taken away...

I could absolutely care less about the NHL. I can honestly say that I've never watched an NHL game, in its entirety on tv (cable or network). I just have never cared.

BUT...there is something about young men and women laying it on the line for the glory of their country that is really endearing. In fact, after learning about some of our players and the Canadian players - I'm actually inclined to maybe watch a Blackhawk's game.

I personally think it would be an awful move for the NHL to not allow players to participate in the Olympics. The vast majority of Americans could give two hoots about the NHL.

Regardless of the channel they might just win some fans. Quit whining.
