White Sox interested in signing Johnny Damon
White Sox interested in signing Johnny Damon
I think this is part of the "chess game" being played- teams like the White Sox have acted like they were not interested in signing anyone else, and waited for the free-agent prices to drop. Now they seem to have hit bottom.
Damon earned $13 million last year from the Yankees. So far, the best offer he's gotten is reported to be about $7 million for a year (from the Tigers). The White Sox probably need another left handed power hitter/RBI guy, and Damon looks like a good fit.
Last year Damon hit .282 (career .288 hitter), 24 homers, and 82 RBI.-

Is Damon really worth $7 million? I guess for one year he may. His arm is terrible and because of that it's a huge liability. Also his HR total is a bit skewed due to the configuration of the new Yankee stadium. HRs were being hit out of there faster then Tiger Woods GF's were popping up last year."Educate and inform the whole mass of the people...they are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty."

A Chicago source has reported that after the White Sox thought they had agreed on a deal that Damon and his agent, the notorious Scott Boras, agreed on, Boras has now upped the price again for Damon. This time the White Sox aren't going to play his game, and have told them their offer is good until Sunday, after which they will withdraw.
Scott Boras is notorious for pulling schemes like this. Many of the MLB teams simply won't even deal with Boras and the players he represents because they feel Boras' ethics are suspect. The White Sox vowed not to deal with Boras again after they were involved with Magglio Ordonez a few years ago. He had a knee injury and reconstructive surgery the final year of his contract with the White Sox. Boras asked the WS to make a free agent offer to Ordonez, but refused to allow the team and team doctors to examine his knee. Ultimately, the Sox pulled out and the only team left was the Tigers, who signed him at a cut-rate price. Boras was upset, since his game is to play 2 or more teams against each other to bid up his players, and he's dissed the White Sox since then for not coming up with an offer for Ordonez. I think the Sox feel that's what he is trying to do again with Damon, and Ken Williams doen't want to get caught bidding against a phantom offer.

Just announced- Johnny Damon decides to take the Tigers' offer for a 1-year contract. The Tigers offer was for slightly more money than the White Sox or Braves were offering, but supposedly Johnny's wife hates Detroit and doesn't want ot live there.
