In one of the strangest trades I can remember the White Sox have traded Jim Thome to the Dodgers. No DH in the National League and they have an outstanding first baseman. Unless Jim gave his blessing, this trade doesn't make since. Williams has already given up 3 young arms, one a starter who last I saw was 3-0 for San Deigo, for a pitcher who was on the DL when the trade was made and still hasn't thrown a pitch for the Sox.

Boy, I find this trade hard to believe. I do think some good may come of it though. Here's what I hope happens. 1.) The Cubs do the right thing and bring him in next year as a LH pinch hitter and finally someone great in the clubhouse. Lord knows they haven't done a very good job this year of who they brought in. Jim has always been a Cub fan and what a way to end his career. They had a chance to sign him several years ago but the Cubs told him Chou was there !st basemen in the future. How did that work out for them?? 2.) Maybe Cleveland will resign him and he ends his career where it all started. Jim was loved in Cleveland ,as he was everywhere he played. I'm happy he's going to a contender but he's a long way from Hinsdale where Momma and his two great kids are. Best of luck JIm it's qnly for a month or two. -
This seems like nothing but a favor to Thome and get him right in the middle of a divisional race. For all the moves the Sox have done they just dont seem like they can get over the hump and get Detroit.
This gives the Dodgers a power left handed hitter off their bench but it also gives them one player who can not play the field so that might hand cuff them a bit. They get a great club house guy and with the way the Dodgers have been scuffling for the past few months maybe his presence and attitude will rub off on some of their younger players.
Thome if he plays beyond this season can not play in the National League. He is not capable of playing in the field and I can not think of an NL team who would use a roster spot solely for a power pinch hitter for a full season. 2ndly and selfishly Thome is within sight of 600 HR's and he isnt going to get there playing in the NL.
There will be a market for him next year in the AL as a DH. His numbers are still viable and if he wants he will find a job but it has to be in the AL.Comment

I think this was a good trade for everyone. White Sox get some kind of prospect (don't know anything about him, but it's better than a sharp stick in the eye), Dodgers get a power hitter for PH duties and maybe some play in the field (who knows?), and Thome getst to play out the year on a contender. Nothing says the Sox won't re-sign Thome next season... In any case there'll be an AL market for him IF he wants to keep playing.Comment

The Giants could have used him! I bet the Dodgers were preempting that trade. I think that is probably correct, but I think the Dodgers went in the direction of Thome for his club house presence and that they have virtually nothing off of their bench. The Giants did add Penny, not sure he is better then if Randy Johnson is able to return, but the Giants offense is very suspect.Originally posted by SFP View Post

Bottom line is I am not sure Thome as a pinch hitter will do much for either the Giants or Dodgers but if his team gets into the playoffs his pick up could pay huge dividends.Comment

Mark Grace and Darren Sutton are the Arizona announcers and haven't mentioned Jim yet. They did interview Joe Torre before the game and he said he hasn't talked to Jim yet. The Dodgers put the announcement of the trade on their big scoreboard last night. Grace kept saying Jim Thome, Big Jim Thome.What part of illegal don't you understand?Comment

Watching the Dodger-D'Back game on the AZ station. They've been showing Jim in the dugout. Tied at 1 right now, so maybe he can get a chance to pinch-hit. Still don't like this trade. Didn't do Jim any favors. Sure, he might get to the World Series, but I would rather see him get to 600 HR.
The announcers, Grace and Sutton have commented more than once what a class act he is.
Just now, the Dodgers pinch hit for the pitcher to start the eight with a 2 run lead. The pinch hitter was left handed batter Juan Pierre. Jim Thome made his first appearance as a Los Angeles Dodger last night.
He had a pinch-hit single in the 8th inning that he drove almost to the right center field wall. But the combination of Jim hitting the ball so hard, and his slow speed limited him to a single. Jim received a huge ovation from the Dodgers' crowd before, during, and after his hit. He was then removed for a ponch runner.
The Dodgers still lost the game 6-0 to the Padres.
