  • Salukis add a player

SIU will have another newcomer next year as
Dion Coopwood, a transfer from D-II, will appear on the SIU roster as a walk-on. He played in only 9 games at Upper Iowa Univ. averaging 1.4ppg.
He is from Dolton Thornridge HS

Since he is a transfer from another 4 year school, if he played last season at Upper Iowa, he would have to sit out a year before he could be eligible to play at SIU.

No, my understanding is that this kid meets the allowances of NCAA Rule 14.5.5.2.9 and is eligible immediately:

"14.5.5.2.9 Nonrecruited Student Exception. The student transfers to the certifying institution,
and the following conditions are met:
        ( a ) The student-athlete was not recruited by the certifying institution (per Bylaw 13.02.11.1);
( b ) No athletically related financial assistance has been received by the student-athlete; and
( c ) The student-athlete has neither practiced nor competed in intercollegiate athletics prior to
transfer, except that a student may have participated in limited preseason tryouts.

Anyway, Dion has not played college basketball since 2003, so he has already sat out a year.

He was at SIU last year anyways. He just didn't go out for the team.

Add one more to the marginally newsworthy file.

Wichita State guard/fwd, junior Jared Young of Kansas City, MO-Schlagle/Pratt (KS) CC, is transfering from Wichita State to Southwest Baptist (D-II, same conference as Central Missouri State.)

Looks like the question is answered, as Dion Coopwood is listed right here with all the rest of the Saluki's.

In this article it sounds like the SIU guys are just havin' so danged much fun together, they just might forget to play ball!

Great find, that article is hilarious.
I wonder if they all hold hands at the end of workouts and sing Kumbaya.

Anyway, even tho so many are picking SIU to run away with the MVC, I still have a question, where is their scoring going to come from? They have good players and play great defense, but recall they sometimes were stuck in 40's.
On the season they averaged 60 points and only 41% FG shooting. Only 2 of their top 8 scorers shoot better than 40%.
This was so patently exposed in their NCAA game against overrated West Virginia, when they got hammered 64-46, and
got only 3 points off the bench compared to WV's 21.

i haven't seen anyone picking siu to run away with the mvc. in fact, i seen more people picking creighton to win the mvc than siu.

but i am more concerned where our scoring is going to come from than siu's. they do return 3 players who averaged 10 points or more and falker averaged 9 points and 8 rebounds.we lost all of our top scorers.with ruff and will being the top scoring returnees. need a big year from zack and salley.
