  • Wessler: Give BU time

This all sounds familiar! Add another possible player to the mix and it should be a very interesting season.

???People say, ???Forget last year', but I want our guys to remember that one, because that will not happen again. We will be much better.??? Geno Ford, 9/22/12

I agree with KW's assessment. I think the patience will be rewarded not only this year, but especially next year.

Agreed. This is a good article from KW. And since I didn't post during the outcry here a few weeks ago when KW wrote his preseason piece on Bradley, I would say that was a fair article from him as well since there are some questions about experience and team chemistry, particularly with the new players.

My only question is why the change in attitude from KW? In years past he seemed to do nothing but pick on Les for all the problems the team went through (and not saying he wouldn't necessarily do that later this season). But now he's asking for patience this year. Interesting!

I'll hold him to this, but I don't want to hear him crying later on if the Braves fall short of the NCAA Tournament this year!

Maybe whatever hatchet that needed burying has received the necessary burying. I really hope so, because if whatever rift existed between coach and media can be closed, then we'll get much better coverage of the Braves as the coach and program become more accessible to the media.

I hope so. I don't wish that every article published by KW turns into a bashing session everytime. Hopefully he stays professional and everything was brought out onto the table between him and the Bradley administration during the offseason. Let's hope KW's more positive approach continues throughout the season.

You guys are setting yourselves up for disappointment.

KW is gonna swing the hatchet, pull it out and swing again and again.

That's why I no longer read that local rag of crap.

You want good (positive) news - breaking news - stay tuned to this site and Bradley's BUBraves.com site.

You want the Drive-by Media's Opinion, then stick to the PJ Star site and their message board.

Agree 100% on your comments about the local drive by media rag. Was I the only one who caught KW's dig at Coach Les? He said "it assumes coach Les will develop the depth he touted in preseason and put it to good use." Then he wrote "Maybe that assumes too much." He couldn't go a whole article without getting his dig in. IMO one Mike Nadel is enough for any rag like the PJS.

I usually have agreed that the PJS has been pretty negative, but I didn't take that line as a dig at the coach, Chico. This time, I thought he was just saying he'd strung together several assumptions, including the coach developing talent...

You guys don't like Kirk Wessler, which is fine, but I don't understand how you can classify him and the PJStar as being part of the "drive-by" media, especially not when it comes to Bradley basketball. That term implies that they only cover the team on occasion and spend very little time doing it. KW goes to almost every game, and Dave Reynolds goes to literally every game. On top of that, they attend every press conference and write multiple stories about the team each week. That hardly fits the "drive-by" media label.

Hate the paper and its writers if you wish, but at least don't unfairly label them something they're not.

well, I don't want to waste your time, since we've covered this many, many times...and the examples of misreporting are too numerous to bother reminding you of all of them...
but if those writers are so well informed and experienced, then there is even less excuse for the inaccuracies and misstatements we have discussed.
There were numerous inaccuracies and gaps in the reporting of the Daniel Ruffin arrest, then another story spinning it all as if it wasn't really the PJS' fault because they weren't given the info they wanted when they asked for it, so they just went with the inaccurate stuff.
Then the repeated misreporting of how BU was being secretive and unfair for not openly discussing their land acquisition and expansion plans....all the while the plans had LONG been openly & publicly displayed on a pedestal right smack in front of the athletic department's door in the Fieldhouse.
Then the missreporting of offensive rebounding, the misreporting of a certain recruit's commitment, etc...personal attacks of Eric Gordon, his family, misreporting of alleged things Bruce Weber said to some Chicago AAU people, and attacks on their very readers for believing what they said about the Jamar smith incident.
If a fan is wrong once in a while, I guess he can be excused since he likely has a full time job elsewhere and doesn't follow sports full time, but you are correct in saying the reporting by the paper should be held to a different standard since they are supposed to be into this stuff full time.

What is "better coverage"....stuff we agree with? I don't think there is any rift...I could be wrong. I think we assume there is sometimes when we don't like whats written. Look at the criticism many of us put forth after the horrible pre season performance. Was there a rift between posters and the program? No we just were giving honest assessments/opinions.

Maybe HE's just calling it as he see's it. Like always. I don't think we can assume alls well when we agree with whats written and think somethings wrong when its not something we agre with.

Fish this isn't directed at you.....its all of us.

To me, "Drive by" is when a news organization only attends an organized press conference, and does not bother to investigate a story further, just prints what's easy to print.

I was disapointed in KW's pre-season dismissal of BU's "D1 virgins" because it only contained information of a press conference and a roster page. That story was essentially the same story we heard from some national hoops guys that obviously did not spend any time researching the MVC or BU.

If KW bolstered his story with any additional player quotes or practice snippets (as we hear about other programs in other towns) then the story would start to climb above "drive by" status.

This column is better because KW seems to be putting more thought about multiple games together.
