Quite frankly that strategy should never work. Anybody in Division 1 should be able to score on another team 4 on 3. You can double a guy, but why do something so drastic that put's your team at such a disadvantage? Kudos to Mr. Curry for not forcing anything and allowing his teammates to do their thing against a junk defense.

Who was the Loyola coach? Great strategy? I would have understood a box on one or double up anytime he touched the ball but 2 players at all times????? It may have worked in HS ball and that would be questionable.

I knew you would know the answer. I was just throwing it out there. I'm sure GW would never deploy this "junk defense" and probably is ashame of "Jimmy 'the patsy' Patsos" right now. GW is strictly a man2man defensive coach.

you are right...and read that story....Patsos does kinda take personal credit for coaching that Maryland team to the National Title!!

Listen to the end of that You tube clip, and they discuss the same thing happening to Larry Bird,
but he says "I wish I could remember the opponent" then says Bird had "a million assists in that game".
However, I don't think Bird had many assists since like Curry, he was taken out of the game byt eh doubleteam.

Someone e mail him and tell him the opponent was BRADLEY....not the Bradley in Indiana, but the one in Peoria, IL!!

Me too... I was at the game. Was young and didn't know the D put on Bird. Thought Bradley walked away with a "victory" in sense....

For years BU had a photo in its Media guide of Bird being face guarded by Carl Maniscalco and guarded from behind by Harold McMath.

I remember from that night one of Bird's two baskets being a break away dunk.

There is a passing mention of the night in Birds book... I think its called Drive. I dont believe he was real impressed by the tactic by Versace.

Interesting that the night we played at InState there was a huge blizzard and the electricity went out. Had to listen to the game with only candle light... we got beat maybe even worse there then at home.

Btw that season was Versaces first, we were real bad didnt make the Valley Tourney but won two games one versus a very good New Mexico State team at the end of the season.. of course the next year was magical with a Valley tourney win and the heartbreaking loss to Texas A & M.

Would a shot clock have had an effect on the BU/Indy St game?

Maybe slightly, but probably not much more than it would have effected most pre-shot clock games. Neither team tried to stall or prolong possessions that I recall.

I was also at that game (hs freshman approx) and I remember thinking this won't work because they had another NBA talent on that team and I think he ate us up. Trivia question: remember the guys name? They also had a pretty tall center who had a good night. Bird couldn't have had too many assists because he was completely denied the ball and their point guard controlled things.
