With the commitment of Cousins, Memphis now has perhaps the best 2009 recruiting class in the country.
Cousins is rated the #2 center in the 2009 class, and they already have a commitment from Xavier Henry, the #1 shooting guard in the 2009 class.
They also have commitments from 2 of the top juco players in the country, and another talented wing.
Now the #1 point guard is said to also be leaning toward Memphis. John Wall, the top unsigned player in the country, said yesterday that Memphis is his leader.

How does Calapari do this? Do they have killer facilities? They seem to have a very good fan base and their arena looks real nice. What is the campus like? He must be a great sales man because for a non BCS school he get's some great recruits year after year.

No, actually Memphis' facilities are not anywhere close to the best, and not as good as most Big Ten, Big East, SEC, and ACC schools.
He is one of the best "salesmen" among Div I coaches.

But what appeals to the kids he recruits is that they think Calipari, with his NBA connections, can get them to the NBA quickly, sooner than other coaches.

I don't know what other promises he makes recruits, but a recruit can also be swayed by promises of playing time, and other "perks".

Part of me wants to believe this and thatthey have a great way of hiding their gifts but the other part says that Calipari just sells his program much better then anyone else. There is something to learn in his process on how he does it regardless. There are plenty of college coaches with NBA ties (JL) and Calipari is the only mid-major coach that scores these guys by the handful every year.

I would guess the Memphis draw has to do with their past success the last few seasons. The campus is an inner city campus like Bradley and is about double the size of our campus. Memphis has roughly 650,000 city population and has the NBA Grizzlies for some entertainment. It's also centrally located for easy road travel to several big cities. Also has several of their games broadcasted nationally. I think it was either this yr or last yr that all of their games were broadcasted nationally. I think that was last yr if I remember reading correctly in the pre-season hype. Plus that run and gun offense is appealing to many players looking to make the jump to the NBA. However, as with any inner city campuses, Memphis has very high crime. Lots of robberies, arsons and various other violent crimes. A U of Memphis football student was actually murdered a couple years ago after he bragged that he won the lottery. A few non-students heard about it and shot him to death after he attempted to drive off while they were robbing him. That was 1 block from campus.

If any of you guys went to see our guys play Memphis in the Sweet 16 you would know that their fan base is a lot like ours. They are community based, a mix of older and younger, they remember the good old MVC days, very knowledgable and polite. Memphis is just a larger metro area to draw in fans and a larger school. I walked away from that game really liking their fans. The Grizzlies have not been there that long to take away from what they have built.
