UNI lands Illinois recruit - Lucas O'Rear

I have heard O'Rear described as a poor-man's Matt Shaw. That might be close. Shaw actually had better stats playing at a higher level of play. O'Rear has played center in high school, and is listed as a power forward, but he is more of a 3-man at the Div I level.
O'Rear is a very good player at Class A Nashville. However, he might need a redshirt year to adjust to Div I play. He has played almost exclusively against small schools. I had heard that SIU wanted him, but after they got Carlton Fay, they were not as aggressive going after O'Rear. Several other MVC schools recruited him, including ISU, but I have not heard that Bradley was after him.

Here is an article from the Carbondale paper from last year that lists Chris Lowery's top 2 recruiting targets for 2007, Lucas O'Rear and Mike Tisdale.

I thought Lowery was such a great recruiter? From PJ Star sports expert Kirk Wessler in his Jan. 10, 2012 column following 8th loss in a row at Drake-
"Yes, the Braves are better than they were when the season started two months ago. By a light year or two, they??™re better."
And from the PJ Star 4/26/12, Dave Reynolds-
"Fields and Grier both appear to be difference makers. If Bradley continues to add the right players around them, happy days may be ahead for the Braves after a long dry spell."

SIU stopped recruiting O'Rear. He no longer had an offer from SIU when he finally chose UNI.

flipper, the rhetorical question was somewhat in jest, aimed at some who had touted Chris Cornelius as a player who would have an instant impact in the Valley.
Cornelius, who was fairly highly touted in high school, went the prep route, but played on a prep team where the entire starting five and at least 3 subs, all got D-I scholarships, and Cornelius ended up never even starting, and not playing very much. Then he sat out a year as a redshirt, so in effect, he hasn't really played much in two years now.
Here is some hype on him from a couple years ago:
Several of his teammates, Cen Dinc in particular, were also very, very overrated while playing at Brewster. Makes you wonder about Dodie Dunson...
With Falker playing well, and Shaw, Fay, and others ready to get some playing time over the next few years, I wonder if CC will get enough PT to be happy.

Fay is a top 150 kid. CC will not see many if any minutes at SIU.

ok. cornelius plays more of a perimeter position than fay. siu doesn't need much backcourt help but if they do cc might see some action, especially if he can play defense which seems to be a pre-resequite for pt at siu.

He is also the star quarterback on the football team. Doesn't Illinois need a quarterback?
Actually, he has said his first choice is to play basketball, but if he was to get drafted by Major League Baseball next year (his senior year), that could all change. His fastball has been clocked at over 90 mph, according to this article--

There is a report that UNI recruit, Lucas O'Rear was injured playing football a couple weeks ago for
Nashville High School. He is a talented 3-sport athlete who is now going to college on a
basketball scholarship, but his injury will likely be of some concern to the folks at Northern Iowa.
He was said to have sustained a knee injury a couple weeks ago in a football game and is out for
the rest of the football season. He has reportedly had knee injuries previously, and missed half of his
junior football season as well with a knee injury.
It is not yet known if his knee injury will require surgery or if he will miss any basketball this season,
but he was on the sidelines this past weekend at the Nashville HS football game vs. Anna-Jonesboro.
At this point there is no mention of this on the UNI message board.
