  • Dana Altman

Dana Altman's Creighton team is the overwhelming favorite to win the MVC this year. This will be his 15th season at CU.
Here is a nice article and interview with Altman.

Interesting that with all the success he has had--
    6 MVC Tournament titles
10 straight seasons with 20+ wins
11 straight seasons in post-season play

Some people still harp on what he hasn't done--
He has never gotten to the Sweet 16.
He has only won the MVC regular season twice, and the last one was 7 years ago.
Their last NCAA Tournament win was 7 years ago.

Amazing that he has to spend much of this interview defending himself and his record--

Yes DC, I agree wholeheartedly. What are they expecting in Omaha, a national championship? You get into the NCAA Tournament and let the chips fall where they may. Ridiculous. I hope someday that's what I have to complain about - Only 6 tournament titles, 2 conference titles, 10 straight 20 win seasons, and 11 straight postseasons. Jeez life is rough in Omaha.
    Onward and Upward!

I think you have to understand that making noise in the tournament is something that will take a program to its next level. That is something that Altman has NOT done. Bluejay fans are ready to be considered "BCS" level when it comes to basketball. They are almost there, they just need to start winning in the NCAA tournament.

Our S16 run is finally starting to pay off as well as the new facilities. It's looking like we could be headed to where Creighton is now. However, Creighton is ready for the next level just like we are ready for our next level, we are just a step behind.

Altman has not just been a winner but he does things the RIGHT WAY! He runs a no nonsense program and you will never see him or his team embarrass their school.

The MVC has a few schools well positioned with talent and coaching to make a good run in the next few years through the NCAA most notably SIU, CU and us. You really cannot ask for much more for any other program that is not a perennial contender.

          You've got it all wrong.

Running Isaac Miles plays into exactly what SanFranPete was talking about - running a clean program and winning the right way. Miles was getting into trouble and we don't want our program sullied with that kind of dirt. We want to win, but we want to win the right way. Memphis' W-L record is impressive, but the character of its athletes (and coach) are not.

The second point, which I assume was a reference to Whitehead, also goes toward running a no nonsense program. Whitehead was lazy and not working hard. As Dana said at the time, "We aren't running a country club here." A large part of the appeal of the team is that, by and large, it has been made up of hard working, under the radar, blue collar kids. Someone who is not willing to work hard has the potential of being a major cancer. He was deliberately signed as an older JUCO transfer (older than most because he had been on a lengthy Mormon mission) to serve as a role model to all the young guys. He was not living up to that role or any other expectation of a Creighton player.

As an alum and season ticket holder, I can say with 100% certainty that I have no problem with Dana's actions in either of these instances. If anything, they even make me more proud of our program and coach.

Everything you wrote there suggests he is running a no nonsense program. Why were those players shown the door? I've also seen other coaches use the public forums to motivate their teams. I still stand by my statement. T I know you are trying to stir the pot again because we discussed in an earlier post why the kid was given the boot. He has a low tolerance for laziness. The Ark. thing is quite another matter that has nothing to do about how he runs a program. Let's give a person their due instead of pounding them at every little thing that goes wrong.

Your response reminds me of a certain PJS reporter LOL.

T your last post has a much better tone and now we stand in agreement! I will though give Dana just like JL the benefit of the doubt because for so many years they seem to do the right thing for their family first, team second and then the school, just like it should be done. I guess I like and respect their character and by the way they are winners. Anyone who consistently belittles these guys are probably insecure 1/2 glass empty kind of guys.

If I was an AD, Dana could coach my team anytime...very classy and professional all the way including the Arkansas situation.

We could only dream of having that level of consistent success over that period of time. They are where we want to be. Of course, change is good
