  • Likely Northern Iowa starter may be out for year with injury

Senior Carlton Reed, who spent 2 years at Iowa and transferred to Northern Iowa, injured his left knee and may be done for the season. It is reported to be a possible ruptured patella tendon, which usually requires surgery and many months of rehab. Reed redshirted 1 year after transferring and missed the first 8 games of last season because of a broken bone he suffered in his foot when the team played games early last year in the World University Games in Thailand. Then after returning from that injury, he broke a bone in his other foot. He only played in 17 games last year. Because he already used his redshirt year, his career may be done, unless he applies for and is granted a rare 6th year medical hardship waiver by the NCAA.

UNI was already shorthanded with injuries--

Carlton Reed has had a big time bad luck bug in his college career. Reed went to Iowa and really shouldn't have been used as a freshman (should have redshirted, IMO). Then, the next year Alford pretty much buried him on the bench. The kid then transfers to UNI, works hard, and prepares to play in the World U Games in Thailand with UNI. He starts the first game, and then fractures his 5th metatarsal in the 2nd half. Rehabs to get back in November and as he is beginning to practice again, fractures the other foot in the same place! Carlton was expected to start at the beginning of the year. He rehabbed and played sparingly, but was obviously not at 100%, even later in the year.

By all accounts, Carlton was playing great ball this summer and fall. Again, he was in the running for a starting guard spot. Then, in practice yesterday, has what looks to be a season ending injury. This is a VERY good kid from local Waterloo, Iowa. It's a shame that his career could be over. Hopefully, the NCAA will grant him a 6th year (if he wants it). And yes, UNI does have an open scholy after Conway has been let go.

Well, from all accounts it looks like you can pencil in UNI on Thursday night. You hate to see injuries ruin a kid's season before it even gets started.

Official word on Carlton Reed's injury- He had an MRI and it confirms a ruptured patella tendon. That's the body's largest tendon that connects the quadriceps (front thigh) muscles to the tibia (bone below the knee).
It requires surgery and many months of rehab to rebuild strength in the leg.--

If you hadn't brought it up, we would never have remembered!

I recall that in preseason predictions, Evansville was the team most commonly picked 10th, maybe just out of habit. So most of us were wrong about multiple teams.

I was bored and did a search to see what we had all said about UNI, since I remember them having some issues early on in the season, and personally not thinking that they were that good. I did not realize I had made such a bold prediction, and it actually made me chuckle reading it. So, I thought I would share some self-deprecating humor today with the group.

I always hate this Monday. It's so depressing.

Just before conference play began, I pegged Indiana State and UNI as the 2 book-it teams for Thursday. Boy was I ever wrong! Although after the first conference game, it looked like my prediction was good when UNI lost at home to ISU (blue).
