I just want to say thanks to Tornado and the bradleyfans group for the "tasty" monicals gift card from the pre-season pick-em game. I wasn't aware that prizes were involved in playing the game but now i'm hooked on them, so everyone should throw in a guess in the next pick-em game. Should be some fun times.
Man do I miss Monicals pizza and salads!!! I was just telling someone the other day that if I made it back to Peoria Monicals would be one of my first stops.
Congrats jasonpeoria911 on the prize, as yes they run a great board here!!!!
Yeah, I remember LaHoods, across University Street from the original Avanti's. I must have eaten hundreds of Lahoods $1-sized pizzas and the $1-meatball sandwiches from Avantis. I think the LaHoods disappeared in the late 70's, and Avanti's moved across Main St.
Not the best quality since they are pictures of pictures, but here's the day the Varsity came down. I was working at CO-OP Records at the time, when it used to be where One World is now, and took some pictures of the demolition.

Pizza story.........my wife loves Davis Brothers pizza, we both grew up in East Peoria. Every time we go back to the ranch in Arkansas my Uncle will come down from Peoria. My wife makes him buy her 20 pizza's from Davis Brothers and he brings them down on dry ice. If we are back for a week she will fix herself a pizza at least once a day!!!!!!!
I love Davis Brothers but I would give anything for a Monicals family pleaser!! I love their pizza but I think I love their Italian dressing more..........we have lived outside the US now for almost 11 years, you cant imagine how much you miss the little things!!!
I loved the place when I was growing up. I would say we ate at the old place once a week. I didnt know my wife at the time but she says that her and her family did the same.........

Monicals does sell their dressing now in bottles.
Maybe you can order some.--
mex-- did you frequent the old Davis Brothers that right at the main corner in East Peoria before they cleared it all out to build the Walmart years ago?
And for those out-of-town, Davis Bros. Pizza is still in business and relocated to 2402 East Washington St. in a small shopping plaza called Fondulac Plaza. They have a second location at 1114 West Glen Ave. in Peoria. I recently ate there and the pizza is still great and just a little different like it was years ago. For a while, the pizza changed, after the original Davis family owners sold it to others in the family. The new owners started to change everything, and the business fell off. The old owner bought it back, and the business is doing well.
I always thought that the Illinois smoking ban would hurt Davis Bros. more than any place. In the past I never ate at a more smoky restaurant. But they seem to be doing fine in the non-smoking era.

I thought Davis Bros. on Glen was closed. Did they just recently re-open?

Thanks, Shaun, that's cool to see....
I once went to Co-op and bought an old, 78 RPM-playing jukebox from the guy who was the then-owner of Co-op, a big burly guy, can't recall his name, maybe Mike?
Does any of this ring a bell....that would have been back in about 1984...
I have long since sold the old jukebox, it was a Wurlitzer 1100, buit it didn't look as nice as this one.....
I started working there around 1987. Mike doesn't ring a bell. The guys I worked with were Tim and Jim. The owner was based in the Quad Cities.

The one on Glen did close several months ago. They open a new one in Peoria Heights on Prospect. It's at the place that closed down suddenly and put all their employees out of work.
If the Malnati's you speak of is the Lou Malnati's Chicago Style Pizza place, then i have eaten there, but not in Peoria. That is some good pizza right there.
