Rivers said he was impressed with Patrick O'Bryant's effort today, and for the second straight day while Kendrick Perkins is unavailable for contact, O'Bryant got the nod with the first unit.
"Patrick had a hell of a practice. He was great today," Rivers said, noting that if he figures out how to play alongside Kevin Garnett, "things could be pretty good for him."
O’Bryant wows
Patrick O’Bryant continued to run with the first unit yesterday in place of Kendrick Perkins [stats], who is still being held out of contact due to his surgically repaired left shoulder.
O’Bryant even closed out the practice with a flair when he dunked over Glen Davis after taking a pass from Kevin Garnett.
Indeed, there are all sorts of benefits that come from playing with the NBA’s reigning Defensive Player of the Year.
“It feels good,” O’Bryant said. “It’s definitely made it easier on me, because all defenses are going to be geared to our top three guys, but they built themselves on defense last year, and that’s carrying over to what we’re doing now. KG is a great post defender, and there’s a lot I can pick up from that.
“But they’ve all been very welcoming. I just have to make sure that I understand everything when it comes up.”
So far so good, according to Rivers.
“Patrick had a helluva practice today,” said Rivers. “He’s learning that playing with Kevin is going to be good for him.”
