One of Illinois State's incoming freshmen, point guard Kenyon Smith of Chicago Simeon High School has failed to meet the NCAA's minimum academic standards, and he has been ruled academically ineligible to play or receive a scholarship this year. There is no word yet whether he will transfer to a juco.
He is apparently enrolled at ISU and is still listed on their roster on the ISU official website--
This unfortunate development leaves the Redbirds even thinner at the point guard position. The only 2 returning players they have that can play PG are Emmanuel Holloway, who had a total of 49 assists in 19 minutes per game in 35 games, and Alex Rubin, who had a total of 9 assists in 20 games. They also have incoming juco, Lloyd Phillips, who averaged 3.8 assists per game at Iowa Western College last year.
