I laugh at these people who buy houses near college campuses and then complain about noise, parties, traffic, music, etc.

Really? College kids do those things? Who knew?

You can't move into a neighborhood that has LONG been established and then, because you now live there, demand the neighborhood and neighbors change. it's not like that area near Bradley just now became a place for college kids, frats, etc.

Sadly, this just doesn't happen at BU. I hear of it in a lot of college towns. To me, if you take away the frats, the noise, the traffic, the kids, etc it takes away the "charm" of living near a campus. You have to take the "good" with the "bad".

Did you guys read the venom from some of the posters especially from one of them? There is a ton of anger and inferiority complex from some of the local residents. "Rich kids"? I went to Bradley and was not a rich kid just one that studied hard and my parents worked hard to be able to receive a decent education. The person writing the trash should maybe do some research and find out what percent of the student body receives student aid. What BU gives their students is the ability to move forward in life and not become a malcontent! BU a party school???? I guess he never attended college or was very social or never went to a real party school and most definitely never hung out at BU. Most places that have a group of 18-21 year olds living in close quarters usually find ways to be very social.

Also the complaining about the students making noise would be complaining (which happens) about airplane noise living by an airport.

        I agree, SFP.
Unfortunately, there are elements of society that delight in fostering "class warfare" like is seen in some of those comments.

I currently live in a fraternity on the same block as Sigma Nu. And I scoff every time I read someone say something like "rich kids." I grew up in a farm with a pretty low income family, and that is the truth of well over half of my fraternity. It really just shows how uneducated people around here are.

I have met only 1 "rich" kid my entire tenure here at Bradley...and she's not even really "rich"...more so well off.

It makes me sick how much of a NON-party school Bradley is...I personally am not one but I feel bad for those who are, because Bradley is lame in that aspect. People who visit their friends and want to have a good time can't even do that by just going to some party where everyone is at. I went to Eastern once and this party had people everywhere...doors open...windows open..people on the balcony and cops driving by every 10 minutes and looking at kids drinking in the yard...didn't do A THING...I was shocked and told ppl about Bradley haha...they were shocked too

Rich kids...hahaha...I worked my arse off in high school to get the chance to go to a good university. I had to work hard because if I didn't get a scholarship then I was going to community college and MAYBE a 4-year after that. Luckily, I got a scholarship to Bradley and I'm footing the rest of the bill on my own working 20 hours a week with a full class load. Sure, there are some "Bradley Brats" but they are BY FAR the minority.

I'll keep this short because I have to be at that aforementioned job in a few minutes (so I can pay for my own **** schooling). I love that the are getting free legal council, I love that they are filing suit, and I especially love that the Children's Hospital stands to gain 50K because of some grouchy old drunken lady.

We need to prove a point here and show Curphy Smith some support. Van Auken recently said in an interview that (paraphrasing here) basically she doesn't care about the Bradley students and that we don't matter because we don't vote and we won't change the outcome in the elections. So to all Bradley students who read this and for those of you who live in the neighborhood around BU: GET OUT AND VOTE HER OUT!!!!! Let's show this woman that the students do have a voice, we do matter, and when you call us out like that it only makes want to prove you wrong that much more.

              GO VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Curphy Smith!!!!!!

It's about time we were taken seriously.

When is the election and why not one of the Sororities or Fraternities throw a fund raiser for the opposition. If there is something that can help the students with a voice that would be helping someone win the election through $$$$. Why do you think lobbyist are still getting their day in the sun? This maybe a good way for the university student to gain some valuable experience. Show them that students can make a difference.
I would think it would not take that much fund raising to make a difference in these local precinct elections. I'm tempeted to contribute a bit to this local election in order to make sure that the students at BU are treated fairly throught the local political structure.

Aging 20 years hasn't made me such an old crotch that I don't know (and even enjoy) that kids in 2008 will have fun just like WE kids did way back when. This moralizing, holier-than-thou, busy-body, intrusive, clueless, shreeking hack should be impeached. If I lived in Ptown, I'd lead the charge.
Eh the keg ban sure changed things but it didnt stop us from sneaking one in the house and hiding it in our rooms

But from what I hear back in the day, they'd go through 10 kegs on a good Saturday.

As for families/old people who move in next to a college campus WHAT ARE YOU RETARDED WHAT DO YOU EXPECT???????????? It's like moving into a frat house and expecting to have a quiet place to study WTF!

In the good old days we use to throw a 100 keg party, throw in a case of Southern Comfort and Mr. Jack Daniels, a few bands and call it a fundraiser. Just about every Frat had a party that charged around $2 at the door for these huge parties. I went to BU from 83-87 and by the time I left they were already not allowing Frats to have open parties.

If BU IFC put togther a door knocking campaing to help out her opponent/got about 50 volunteers to go knock on doors for her opponent, she'd see pretty quickly whether bradley matters.

If two students from every fraternity and sorority at Bradley gave up 10 hours to campaign against here, and they talk to one person every 3 minutes or so, that's almost 8500 votes, which I'm guessing would swing any city council election.

Then again, I think Peoria has cumulative voting, so maybe that won't work.

In any event, the BU greek community should definately push to oust that b****

As a member of BU IFC, I can say that we have had Curphy Smith in to talk twice at our Gavel meetings (weekly IFC meeting to inform the fraternity chapters on campus of what is going on) and he has visited numerous houses asking for support. The last time that he spoke, he left a box of pamphelets for us to go door to door and drop off, obviously not in people's mailboxes because that is illegal but for their doors and the sides of the mailboxes. Also numerous students have become eligible to register students to vote in the election if they have a piece of mail saying that they live here in Peoria. These students have been going to each fraternity's and sorority's weekly chapter meeting to register all the Greeks to vote. Does everyone register? Of course not, but from my understanding, she only won by 400 votes in the last election. I know we already have more than that signed up to vote. Believe me we are trying to do our part to help ensure that she is no longer here. We also are trying to play it somewhat smart because if we throw a fundraiser and he doesn't win, then all h*** may break loose and many of the greeks are afraid of that. I applaud Sigma Nu in their efforts and if they need anymore support, they know that they need only to let us know and we'll back them.

By saying the students do not matter this woman is showing her complete ignorance of what they bring to the table. Without the students BU disappears and all the revenue and jobs that Peoria counts on from the institution go with it. By continuing to be hostile to the students she is creating an environment the is not conducive to the good of the University in a whole. By having a fund raiser and supporting the opposition I would doubt if she won if she could do more then what she is doing already and by seeing that you could make a difference then maybe she would be bright enough to work with the school in a positive manner. If the students have the ability to raise cash, trust me, politicians will respect you. The one thing they know is money because that is their life line to stay in their position.

City will defend Van Auken in suit

City Attorney Randy Ray said he wasn't concerned with the taxpayers being liable for any potential losses in the case. "I wouldn't hold my breath on it." Ray said.

Just wondering here but if she was representing her base as a council woman at the time of when this happened, I suppose then it was ok for her to have been drinking while on the job? I would have to guess the city of Peoria has some statue against drinking while either working or working as a representative of the City.

I think this type of action by the City is horrible, they have now opened up the city to be added as part in this law suit and they withheld this decision until after the election. If she would have lost would the city represent her?
