There is nothing better then Illinois politics.

The council woman is getting preferencial treatment by the Peoria police, she was asked to leave repeatedly yet refused and does not get ticketed. If she is not on the council she goes to county sits and gets bailed out and has a court date ahead of her. I am pretty sure you can just trespass while intoxicated.

If you live next to a fraterity house, something tells me you might expect some loud noises. College aged students tend to "enjoy" themselves on occasion. To complain would be like complaining that the airplanes by an airport are to loud. You moved there, there are going to be noise situations.

The council woman needs to clearly shut up and stop this continual talking to the media. Yes she is getting her word out on the pages of the PJStar, but she is coming off as holier the now and above any question. Most logical people can see she was in the wrong and her continual running of mouth is not making her look any better.

BU has a respondsiblity in this too but they walk a tight line here. Lets be realistic, many BU students come from well off families and to keep a private University rolling those well off families need to be appeased. BU can not go and arrest, ticket or harrass their own students, but they do need to discuss the issues with the students. But the bottom line is the students are going to enjoy themselves, unless it gets to an absolute beligerant state the school and city should show restraint, quite unlike the good councilwoman has shown.

    Got to love "beer muscles"

So, normally I'm pretty critical of the Greek System here at BU. I think we need major change and need it quick. I see the negative impact it can have as an RA. However, I am also the president of my fraternity and can understand how positive an influence a Greek organization can have on a college student's life. The negative actions of a BU fraternities AND sororities make it hard for the good actions to shine through. But from every account I have heard, some from very disinterested parties, Matheny handled the situation very responsibly and it wasn't until the councilwoman called in the Peoria Police that there was even talk of wrong doing on the part of Sigma Nu. I think that the fact that this may end of being a positive for the councilwoman is disgusting, and, in comparison if I were even to handle a situation after consuming even a sip of alcohol(which, from what I understand is MUCH less the VanAucken had) in my position as an RA I would be swiftly reprimanded, and find it disheartening that the expectation of a elected official is that much lower....

You're an RA and the president of a fraternity?

Maybe a new fraternity without a house, so members are all together in a dorm?

I feel as much sympathy for people who move next door to a fraternity house complaining of noise, as I do for the people who move next to Wrigley Field and complain about drunk people and traffic. Similar to people who move next to an airport and then complain about the noise.

Sounds like an ego trip that she couldn't back up. Hopefully the city council disciplines her in some way, and voters vote her out.

I hope to see the video, it should play out real well for her, her angry ambulance friend, and his unidentified mystery contestant.

And why doesn't she go knock on the doors of some crack house(there are plenty in her district)with her ambulance buddy? Come on big hitter. Step up to the plate.

JMM, beautiful! I also love the hosing her down until she at least tiraded on the public sidewalk. It's good to see some common sense over here compared to the PJS board. I guess that's why this all got started anyway, eh?

As far as the video, you can be sure that it will be released eventually. However, you can't let the cat out of the bag quite yet. Especially when the cat is a power-loving, beer-muscled, tirading psychopath. Once they can get a hold on getting some discipline in-line, and possibly getting their noise violation thrown out, the video will be viewable for all. I'm sure BU and their legal assistance has told them the same.

I'm sickened with how the Peoria Police handled this situation as well. There are stories that Van Dike'n "forced" some of the police to stop pursuing an attempted robbery suspect in the area to get them to come to the house that night. Then, she walks off without any sort of questioning, breathalyzing, or ticket/arrest!! I am very glad though that the BU police have their own report that contradicts everything she has been saying in the media and to Peoria police.

I also don't think BU is going to stand by another time and let someone try to smear them in public, especially when it seems as though BU did everything right and the drunk smearer did everything wrong. Glasser is a smart woman, and I believe she will back her students on this one as far as she can. Van Dike'n will get what's coming to her this time.

Don't get me started on Rand. That guy is truly a piece of work. I've left my house twice this semester to him in our yard, with a camera, taking pictures. Creepy. Thanks for his addy T. He will be getting a nice, cordial letter from me soon that takes him to task.

Also, an idea for the "rent-a-cop" BUPD. Why not happen to be sitting somewhere along Moss Ave when they have their next wine, whine, and cheese party at mr ambulance's house.

Ol big britches city councilwoman pulls out after a few glasses of wine, and give her the ol' Tony LaRussa treatment. Show her how real the field sobriety and breathalizer tests you give her are. Hell, show her how real a DUI from the BUPD would be.

Bet she wouldn't drunkenly refer to them as rent-a-cops again.

I would encourage everyone who's upset by this clear abuse of power to echo your complaints to Mrs. Van Auken directly -

Also to the council as a whole -

And then the Peoria Police Department -

And then to Dr. Glasser -

I would highly recommend that when articulating the complaint regarding this hypocritical attempt at abusing power, you do so in a clear and concise manner, rather than belligerently after 'a few glasses of wine' at dinner and 'an after-dinner cocktail'.

Also, I would encourage everyone to donate to her opponent when she is up for re-election. I know I will be.

Seems to me a even better way of showing dissatisfaction is for all to attend the next city council meeting and voice those concerns directly to the council and to the councilwoman.

Ok, so the story goes like this. A lady calls the city police about Sigma Nu having a loud party about 11:45pm. City Police gave the call to us because it's normally BUPD's jurisdiction to handle the frats. At the time of the call, BUPD was helping Peoria PD search for 2 Armed Robbery suspects near the McDonalds on Main St. PPD had roughly 6 officers plus us there searching. So anyways, BUPD goes over to Sigma Nu, yeah the music was up slightly and a group of about 15 in the backyard. BUPD made Sigma Nu turn OFF the music and then everyone went back inside the house with the exception of a few kids going to the front porch to chat for a bit. Then, not even 10 seconds after the BUPD Officer leaves, the lady calls back to complain again, saying they were talking loudly in the backyard. So BUPD rolls thru a minute later and not a sole in the backyard or the alley, just the same few guys on the porch. So BUPD clears again and then 5 minutes later, lady calls back to complain again that they were being noisy out back and in the alley. BUPD rolls thru 2 minutes later and same situation, no noise or anyone out back. It is a possibility that a group of kids may have been passing thru the alley to another house and were rowdy but no one was there when BUPD came thru again. So the lady complaining called Rand about it and it just so happened that Van Auken was there drinking. 20 minutes go by before Sigma Nu calls PPD on Van Auken and gang at there door hooting and hollering. Van Auken demanded the PPD clear the Armed Robbery search and come give these kids tickets for allegedly being noisy. So a PPD Lietenant, Seargeant and 2 City Officers show up. The Lt. eventually forces a city officer to write Sigma Nu a noise violation ticket. Then again, the Lt. was kind of forced to write them a ticket in the first place. The big wig City Police Chief would be mighty pissed to be woken up at 1am by a Councilwoman saying a City Lt. couldn't handle a little noise complaint. So that is that. Me personally, I think this was all a setup to make BU and BUPD look bad. BU administration and the neighborhood association had a meeting about this Friday afternoon. I'm guessing Rand or someone wasn't happy about a solution and decided to do this. Now, i'll admit that some frat parties can be major noise bumpin outside but these neighbors need to be able to handle a little noise like this situation. If BU wasn't in that area, those residents would be lucky to not be shot or robbed when stepping outside.

                                Jason
