  • Drake gets a 3rd verbal commitment for 2009

Aaron Hawley, a 6'7", 190 pound forward from Rogers HS, Rogers, Arkansas, has verballed to Drake. He also had an offer from Belmont, and had interest from Saint Louis, Yale, Air Force and Arkansas State. Hawley joins 2 other similar forwards Seth Van Deest of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Reece Uhlenhopp of Urbandale, Iowa, in the 2009 recruiting class for Drake.

I've seen other articles that say he had offers from both Arkansas State and Yale...who knows what's actually accurate? Sounds like he's a good athlete and a good shooter. I've also read that he's a very intelligent player (Ivy League offers does not always equal high basketball IQ). A poster on ValleyTalk who's seen him play says he's non-stop hustle on both ends of the court.

As an FYI, Drake also has two newcomers on campus this season who are sitting out due to NCAA rules (one a transfer and the other a European player), so you could say Hawley is Phelps' 5th recruit for the 2009-10 season.

Not sure how similar he is to either Uhlenhopp or Van Dees, other than them all being in the 6-7 to 6-9 range.

Can you name the transfers and tell more about them?

The transfer is Ryan Wedel, a 5-11 guard. He was high school player of the year in Kansas in 2006, and averaged 15 ppg as a sophomore at Arkansas State. He led the Sun Belt in 3-pointers made and was 3rd team all-conference as a soph. Very similar player to Josh Young.

The other player sitting out this season for DU, is Frank Wiseler, a point guard originally from Luxembourg. Last season, he was the starting point and team captain for Urspring, the team that won the German 18-under championship. Those that have seen him play describe him as Emmenecker with an outside shot.
