  • Guard/forward from OH commits to SLU

    from STL Post Dispatch:
Ohio guard-forward Smith commits to SLU

Jonathan Smith, a 6-foot-7 guard-forward from Grove City, Ohio, has made a verbal commitment to play basketball at St. Louis University.

Smith averaged 17 points and 11 rebounds and was an all-conference selection as a junior last season for Grove City High, just outside Columbus. He said most of the other interest in him came from schools in his home state such as Ohio University and he was swayed to SLU by the presence of Coach Rick Majerus. ???I??™ll get better under him,??? Smith said, ???and he cares about what you do after basketball.???

Smith describes himself as a small forward who also can defend a power forward or a shooting guard. He said he was surprised when he was first contacted by SLU in the early summer because he had drawn little attention outside Ohio. ???It was pretty tough choosing them over OU,??? he said. ???But now, I don??™t feel good about the decision. I feel great.???

Smith can sign a letter of intent starting on Nov. 12.

Smith said he liked the SLU players he met during recruiting. ???They??™re a bunch of great guys,??? he said. ???There??™s no bad character guys. That was important for me to see that.???

And if you want to talk about character guys, I??™ll say this about Smith: I don??™t think any one ever has called me ???sir??? as many times as Smith did. I think there was one sentence in our conversation when he used the word ???sir??? three times. So here??™s a guy who has been pretty well raised.

Sounds like a nice player, but the type a MAC or MVC team would go after.
He's rated 2-stars, and St. Louis got him over offers from Bowling Green, Ohio, Kent State, Akron, and Miami.

With the recruiting reputation Majerus has, I am surprised to see him mostly go after 2 and 3-star kids.
    Here are his 2008 recruits-

and now another 2-star kid for his first 2009 recruit.

Good thing he's such a good coach, otherwise he'd have trouble climbing up in the A-10.
