  • More about Bradley and other Valley teams' disappointment with new schedule

Dave Reynolds has another column about the new MVC schedule.
Bradley is not the only school upset with the schedule--

    Valley on schedule for disappointment
Bradley, conference foes, distraught over 17th and final version of schedule--

I was surprised by Elgin's flippant (IMO) retort to KK's question on the BU/ISU game:

Kavanagh said it was "the first time in 21 years we'll be playing that rivalry game at home when our students aren't here." Responded Elgin: "We did fail to do that this year. But it's the first time we've failed to do it in 22 years, which is certainly something that needs to be considered in the process of conference criticism."

The fact that it has been done for 20+ years prior indicates that it should be done in the twenty-first year too. You don't get a hall pass to make scheduling snafus in the twenty-first year just because you did the right thing thing the previous 20 years. The MVC dropped the ball on this one.

Based on the information in the PJS articles this week, it would appear the the League Office needs to tighten up the scheduling process. A preliminary schedule was circulated to the schools ... later, a final version is distributed which looks nothing like the preliminary version. Who gets to decide when the current version should be the final one?

I would suggest that the League office gather all the scheduling variables from the schools, generate the most balanced schedule it can giving priority to some games (such as rivalries) and then send the schedule out and be done with it. No iterations!

Elgin better not run a hospital.

When you don't own your arena, and you compete with the Peoria Rivermen, the home show, the auto show, monster trucks, and Brooks and Dunn, you're not going to get all of the ideal scheduling you would desire. This isn't a slap at BU or the Civic Center, just a fact of life.

          Right.

And if UIUC plays some games in Peoria next year.... hmmm.... wonder who will get 1st choice of dates or times. UIUC will fill the arena, Bradley will average 9000. PCC might favor UIUC in scheduling.

Perhaps the fine folks at Bradleyfans.com should make the MVC schedule since it seems to be so easy.

At least the league plays a round robin schedule and we don't have to worry about which schools we only play on the road or vise versa. Everything evens out at the end.

Having built scheduling systems for clients in my youth, I'd love a crack at it!

I think that the intelligent posters at Bradleyfans could equal the MVC scheduling effort after we each had 17 drafts of beer.

So you compare dropping a baby to playing a game?

Everyone has sung praises for Elgin in the past and now with a schedule that they did 17 times everyone is upset.

I think it was explained pretty well

I doubt JL is really to distraught to comment..I mean if he is that's kind of silly. What's there to say that's going to do any good. You gotta play the games and go from there.

Well, saying something -- anything -- looks better than declining to comment. He could've said this: "Yeah, it's a tough schedule early on, but those are the cards we've been dealt and we'll live with it. You gotta play the games and go from there."

Really, how hard is that? I don't understand why some people refuse to comment on topics, especially something fairly trivial like this. It makes no sense to me.

"The past two years have added a new complication. In an effort to attract higher caliber officials, the MVC has added Tuesday and Sunday league games to its usual Wednesday-Saturday slate."

Think we will see any of this "higher caliber officiating"?
