  • Message to "gurus"

I just sent the following message to Van Coleman at Hoopmasters and wondered whether more of us shouldn't be speaking out. Maybe if we make some noise they'll start to realize that not all of their subscribers are BCS blowhards. Here it is:

I see you've jumped on the bandwagon and removed Prosser from your rankings after his verbal to Bradley. I had trusted that you'd be one recruiting "guru" who wouldn't play that game. What happens . . . does your subscribership go down if you insult BCS types by putting Jim Les recruits ahead of them? Has it not occurred to the recruiting world yet that Jim Les ROUTINELY beats out "high majors" for recruits?

Well, unless there is some reason you can give better than Rivals (he had an "inconsistent" junior season, they say, after he AVERAGED A DOUBLE-DOUBLE), this is one subscriber who will look elsewhere for "expertise."

If Prosser is a good player, he will have success at BU, that's all that really matters.

I agree with er as I only care about how he plays for BU and could care less about how they rate him ; the important thing is he is coming to play for Bradley which should be exciting as we all wanted him and when we get 2 more top recruits to go along with Milo and Jordan it will be a very good class.

I guess I agree with ER3 more on this topic. It irks me that a kid might get slighted for not ending up at a Big Ten school, or picking BU over Iowa, but I am glad we have him, and how he plays for Bradley the 4 years he's here is what's more important.

The fact is the gurus can't have a first-hand knowledge of all the players and therefore adjust their ratings en masse to protect their "fraternal interests" works to Bradley's advantage. It doesn't win the PR contest, but it does mean that schools that rely more on the recruiting newsletters are at a disadvantage to the schools that relentlessly work the recruiting circuit like Bradley does.
